Looks gooooood. Pretty original idea, great to see Pine in leading roles, and Denzel doesn't make bad movies with Tony Scott. Thoughts? Out this November

I think we should start a lottery of how many plot holes there will be. Whoever guesses closest wins. I'll start. 27.

Went in not expecting a whole lot.
    Fcking loved it. Excellent film.

Saw it at the weekend. About as exciting as a film about a train can be.

It seems that nearly every Denzel film has him either in a control room trying to calm down someone through radio/mobile phone or else he's at the scene being being spoken to from the room, in which case he's the maverick doing the right thing despite the bureaucrats.

Surprisingly good - thought itd just be a Speed 3 type movie but it was far better. Denzel was great as always...

Directed by Tony Scott - the reason I will never watch this film. I've been fooled into watching his crap one too many times.

There was a speed 3???? Speed 2 was enough for me. Never will watch a film with Speed in the title again.

Denzel Washington is a great actor and I don't recall (though am open to correction) him being in a bad movie. From "Glory" to "Training Day", he is one of the best actors working today, and is the reason why I'll go to see this movie.

The train can't go below 5 miles an hour...

Not a big fan of tony scott though.

There is a point in this film where a police car flips over, and I couldn't for the life of me figure out why.

That's the kind of film it is.

What the hell was that about??? The train isn't even involved in that incident. The police are giving the lad an escort, and somehow the car flips...

I was waiting for a "I'll take the bus" quote at the end, but no joy.

The Last Boyscout,Enemy of the State,True Romance, Crimson Tide, Man on Fire? all good movies, hes defintely a mixed bag though, Domino, ugh.

I admittedly judge him on his recent output (which unfortunately IMO includes the nonsense that is Man on Fire!) but I just hate his directorial style, completely overstylised and the cinematography and editing try too hard to be 'cool' but come across as if it was directed by someone who just messes around in Final Cut and throws every naff effect he can find in there, with no regard as to what is coherent or watchable. Once, perhaps he was a solid entertainer, but no more!

Sorry, I just frickin' hate Tony Scott :pac: When his name came up at the start of Pelham 123, I swore aloud, and learned a valuable lesson about always checking the directors name on the DVD case!

Basically, Unstoppable = Runaway Train - 2 convicts

I wouldnt recommend paying to see this film at all, its worth a watch but not worth paying for. Wait for it on TV or something

Ashamedly, I actually thought this was alright. For what could have been a train wreck (har de har, see what I did there) it was actually fairly watchable, probably down to the two strong leads.
    Could have been terrible otherwise.

Looks like one ramped over the track and couldnt straight up and another cop car, on the side he was crossing to, rammed him causing him to flip.

    Don't you remember Speed

saw this movie, wouldnt rate it too much, typical denzil in that kinda way, was looking at the credits i think one of the movie producers works on csi/24 so it has that kind of a feel to it, jumping around from place to place in one moment and lots of text along the bottom telling u where the scene is taking place, not a bad movie but not a great movie, the young actor in it is good, the guy from the new star treck

Just seen it, it was pretty good!...Speed on a train, it was fairly decent for what it is, kinda tense as well. I'm not a massive fan of Tony Scott, but the odd time he does something resembling a good action flick.

I'd recomend this for that cold winter night curled up with a box of After Eights :-)

Saw it there too a couple of weeks ago, thought it was a pretty decent flick , ramped up the tension nicely, working class heroes and all that. Only thing was I felt it seemed pretty damn easy to stop the train if they had just put their minds to it, so I was a little underwhelmed in that respect!

I despise Tony Scott's style usually, Man On Fire is the biggest load of over-edited crap, but this wasn't too bad.

Yeah, it's got 86% on RT and a 7.2 on IMDB, Metacritic has 69/100 and a 7.3 user score.

I saw the trailer and was very much..."meh"...

Went to see it to kill a couple hours and was pleasantly surprised though. Actually thought Pine was pretty decent too!

I really enjoyed it. Wasnt expecting anything spectacular, but it does exactly what it says on the tin tbh. I quite like Chris Pine as well, and Denzel is always watchable.

I'm with the Tony Scott haters tbh. It was ok. Like most of Mr. Scott's recent output it only has one major flaw. It was directed by Tony Scott.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,783 ✭✭✭Hank_Jones

I thought it was good enough, kept me entertained for the 90 minutes anyway.
More than I can say for most films these days.
It's never going to be a classic, but it certainly isn't a bad film.

Tony Scott - True Romance, Man on Fire, at least he has made some good films, others directors go through their careers without any good films, at least the man has two.

True Romance was great in fairness, looking at his filmograph on IMDB, I actually think Man On Fire is his worst film that I've seen(not seen Domino mind).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,256 ✭✭✭Decuc500

Love Tony Scotts movies, I love his visual style. I can see why it might be off putting, Domino being the most extreme example, but I'd pretty much go to see anything he does.

    1) Never, ever, let a guy who looks like Mongo drive a “choo-choo”.

    2) If a train is travelling at 70mph and a helicopter can speed up to it, surely the safest method of stopping the train would be to anchor someone down onto it. But, no. In this movie, you also need another train to ram into the runaway train from the front! How is anyone meant to land on that?!

    3) After the first attempt failed, for obvious reasons, you’d guess the brainics might think to land another guy on top of the train again. This time without another train ramming into the front of the runaway train. But, no.

    4) Once Denzel and Kirk have attached their train to the back of the runaway train, surely it’d be quicker and safer for one of them to run and jump over each carriage, get to the front of the train and stop it manually? But, no.

    5) Kirk saves the day by jumping off a pick-up onto the runaway train. Why didn’t they think to do that from the very beginning of the film? But, no.

    6) Trains can run at 70mph around a bend on one wheel. Seriously

    1 never let randy near a train:D

2 you couldnt lower someone at that speed he would most likey be ripped in two from just jumping 3 foot, physics dont allow it id say,

    3 refer to point 2

4 they did do that and it failed, also id try and stop the train with the one on the back before id go carriage jumping, which is what they did end up doing, untill they came to a gap that was to big,

5 they did but randy was driving:D, and they couldnt do it untill they got a straight runing side by side with the train, and had access

6 train wasnt going 70 MPH on the bend, it was doin 62 when kirk jumped on and had been gaining speed since the curve, (id probably complain about the train tilting and just falling back on)

after just watching it, it was a good show and will draw obvious comparisons, but i quiet enjoyed it,

what i liked most about it is that it didnt drag, we had a good introduction to the carcaters, and what they were like, while the situation of the runaway thrain had a nice gradual start at the same time, 90 minuters are great, not to long and drawn out and not to short for a story like this,

i dont understand the hatred for tony scott, i know a few directors that i like and had never realised tony scott, i loved man on fire, which was his 4th last film, enemy of the state 2nd last before that, crimson tide 2nd last before that again, out of 16 films that hes directed there 4 that i would rewatch without thinking, not a bad average, there also 1 or 2 that i would posibly rewatch but wouldnt go outta my way,

Think he meant that if someone was on the lead train trying to match speed with 'unstoppable' and jumped onto the train would have been able to stop the runaway rather easily. Lowering someone from a helicopter was ridiculously high risk.

I don't quite follow. If the helicopter and the train are going at the exact same speed of 70mph, how could you be ripped in two?

That's not what I'm saying, but that's an even better, safer way of stopping the train. :D

but hes also attached to 30 foot long cable, that will swing around at 40MPH which is what they were trying, never mind at 70MPH, also he has a landing area thats probably a foot and half wide,

maybe from the front of the train it could have been done, but it was a last minute plan and was high risk putting the train in front of it in the first place,

same as the cop car flipping it was so last minute and everyone was rushing to the train that there were to many cars going over tracks travelling side by side, its inevitbale one car will clip another, (also makes from great dramatic effect;))

Biggest WTF in the film by far was that grumpy guy's
train exploding FOR NO REASON when it de-railed
