    Hey guys
Getting back into the old hobby and Im looking for advice

I bought a Bearcat 280XLT (instead of the Sony Air 7 I was asking about)but I wanna get a decent camera

The old Praktica wont do the job anymore so I want a good digital SLR

I have a Fuji S5600 but the lens is a bit limited

So without breaking the bank any suggestions

Will my old 80-200 zoom fit on a digital SLR

Sorry if these sound like stupid questions but as I said Im only starting to get back into the hobby and I want help/suggestions from people who take photos of aircraft(not flowers);)

I'm no expert but I know my lenses for my Canon 450D won't fit on anything except a Canon.

There are good package deals for Camera + lenses on Jessops etc. Think I paid around 700 for the EOS 1000D with a 70-300mm and the 18-55mm

Well I don't take too many shots of aircraft, but neither do I shoot too many flowers ;)

Anyway - assuming your old 80-200mm lens is for a Praktica then it's probably not going to work on a Canon or Nikon dSLR camera.

The Canon EOS 1000D kit mentioned by Neon-Circles seems like a great deal, the 70-300mm lens will be fine, plenty of reach on it at the longer end. Nikon have some good deals too. And there's plenty of good second hand Canon/Nikon gear out there if you're looking to upgrade at some point in the future.

So something like a Canon EOS 500D/1000D or Nikon D3000 should get you started. Look up some of the local camera stores & check their websites for prices, also look at some of the big electronics/computer chains and online stores for prices.

ok well first off you have plenty of options. where are you based. there is a great shop on the quays called Birmingham's. they sell brand new as well as second hand cameras and lens's. I bought a cannon 450D and a sigma 35 400mm lens there about six months ago and they are great. i got both second hand and the package cost less than half of the original cost. also they threw in a free memory card. i simply went in with my shopping list and they went looking for it if they didn't have it and called me when they got it in. the guys in there are good too and will do there best to accommodate you. my advise go shopping on line and find what you want then see if you can get it second hand before buying brand new

I am very bias towards Canon as that is the camera that I have and my first DSLR. I have a reconditioned 350D that I have had for almost 4 years now and am now saving for a new Canon camera. You say you don't want to break the bank, well that depends on the size of your bank. Any of the 3 digit D Canon cameras's are really good entry level cameras if you want to get into using a DSLR. they are the 400D, 450D, 500D, 550D and the 1000D. they all range in the €450 -€700 range, or there abouts. If you have more to spare then you can go for one of the 2 digit D camera's, 30D, 40D, or 50D. the 1 digit D Camera's will probably be out of your budget, in the €1700 - €3000 range.

You will also need a zoom lens with at least 300mm focal length for photographing flying aircraft, in addition to the kit lens that the camera's come with, although you can buy camera bodies only.

There are a number of bargains to be had on ebay also check out ffords.co.uk.

Hope this is of some help.

I'd strongly suggest going 2nd hand. Something like a Canon 40D with the 70-200mmf4L can be obtained for around €1000. Although not quite as strong a zoom, it is fine if you can get reasonably near runways, such as in Dublin. This would be a much better combination to start with.

This came up a while back on the forum and I posted some info on the Nikon D40 and sigma 70-300 lens. It should be cheaper nowadays, especially if second hand and you go for body only, and then buy the long reach lens.

As I said in the original thread, a lot of photo experts on the net will recommend professional gear no matter what you ask for, but the sigma 70-300 is a very sharp and fast lens in an amateur sense, if ya get me. Its also handy as a replacement for binoculars. I live in Dublin 24 but at a bit of a height so can see planes landing at Dublin Airport from my apartment through the lens. Ok, so I wont get a reg off it or see the pilots, but its enough to make out the airline and aircraft type.
