Hi guys, hope you can help, a friend of mine in from the North he has a car registered up there, insured up there etc. He is moving to Dublin for work but can still have all the details registered in the north to his home house. He could be here for up to a year working but will be going home once a month. What are his options? Does he have to register the car in the south? Thanks!!

It all hinges on where he's resident. From what you're saying it sounds like that's going to be here, so yes he would have to register the car here. On the upside, he should be able to register the car VRT-free on a transfer of residence, which will most likely add to its value.

    It's all here

The main points are that he must have owned the car for at least 6 months in the North and that he cannot sell the car for a further 6 months after registration in S. Ireland.
