it started last week, after the initial 3.41 update, it loaded and installed fine i thought, but when i'd boot ps3, i was getting stuck at the waves for nearly 5 minutes before the xmb would kick in,
got sick of this so i said i'd do a factory reset, i got a copy of 3.41 from the ps3 ireland site, which was actually an updated 3.41 and was re-released last monday, it would install but hang at 99%, i left it for ages still 99%, so unplugged the unresponsive machince, booted, nothing of course,
so managed to get in ps3 safe mode, went throught he various options, giving me the screens above,
re-downloaded the firmware incase the first one was corrupt, same thing, could install as far as 99%, turned it off, now i cant even try re-install from safe menu, as i'm getting the serious error sreen, call tech support !

ill have to ring sony i guess, and im still under warranty thankfully, but this replacement im sure ill get, will be my 4th ps3 in 3 years !

eta: anyway i can deactivate this ps3 on the webs ?

Sorry to tell you but you can only deactivate it on the system itself. Its stupid I know.

Sorry to hear that you're getting trouble with the update. There was a problem with the update and they know that, so hopefuly when you ring them they will sort you out.

Sony said not to update to that firmware unless you had the problem with the upgrade of the a HDD, and you did turn it off during an update. there was no improvement to the newer 3.41 that up got ty loading 3.4 and then update the normal way on the ps3 itself.

Try getting a older firmware and try again. http://ie.playstation.com/ps3/support/system-software/

first one was 40gig phat, blu ray dies after 11 months, got a refurb, that was starting to make really loud noises after a year so traded it in for a slim, and now my slim went belly up, replaced by a new one ! glad it happened tho, as it keeps me in warranty ! ive been lucky

i have a mate i remembered sticking my copy of wipeout on his machine, he's doesnt play online at all, so im gonna get his machine and deactivate it, i should be sorted then,
if not i'm goosed, all cod 4,5,6 map packs and other dlc gonski !!

If you turn off any piece of equipment during a firmware upgrade it ALWAYS gets bricked. You didn't have much choice though.

I'm still on my launch PS3 so good for some bad for some.
Really bad in your case !
