Ideas for an accent colour?

I am in the process of doing up the house, hoping to get a few ideas for the sitting room. The floor is oak, and the walls are cream, almost white. I have a black lampshade and some black accessories, and I'm planning on getting a soft grey suite of furniture.

I also have a large green kentia palm in one corner which adds some colour too. The mantelpiece is a very soft grey. I would like peoples opinions on an accent colour, I was thinking maybe some kind of magenta, but am worried it would look weird. Any suggestions? Thanks :)

I saw a designer recently on telly talking about colours that go well with grey furniture. soft pale greens were really nice, and you could add a third colour such as pale yellow or a soft orange with cushions etc.
In my opinion magenta would be too strong.

Yes the house is very contemporary. Duck egg blue sounds fab! I suppose Im worried about what any colour will look like with the black, if that makes sense to you? Also the room doesn't get much sun during the day so want to make sure its nice and bright, thats why I painted the walls so light. Im not able to post a pic at present cos Im away for the next 2 weeks, thanks for the ideas though :D

If you take a look at the Farrow and Ball website they have some unusual colours. You can also request a colour chart and they will post it out within two days:) While their paints are expensive, you can always have them copied in a more affordable paint brand.

dulux have a lovely green colour which I have just used called calm spirit. Its a light green colour and i just love it....Its a light pale green colour which seems to accentuate all wooden items. I cant praise it highly enough.....Keep away from toasted walnut, its resembles skim coat when applied to walls

OP, I would recommend that you browse this web site.
It is a home decor blog updated regularly by a lady who adores blacks and greys - and has a keen sense of what compliments those shades.

    Hope it helps!
