Ireland has entered a strong team for the EUROPEAN UNION Championships (Women) taking place in Keszthely,Hungary this week.Katie Taylor seeks her 3rd EU title in a row and opens defence of her title this evening against Spain's Jennifer Miranda, who has had some excellent wins of late. The winner here goes through to the quarter finals. One possible opponent for Taylor later in the week may be Liverpool Rotunda boxer, Natasha Jonas who has also been in great form. I recently saw Jonas win the English title and most impressive she was too.

Drimnagh's Sinead Kavanagh and Alanna Murphy of the Eastside BC have both received byes into the quarter-finals. Murphy, the former Alanna Audley, recently reached the finals of the English ABAE championships but now must face Gulsum Tatar, who has twice defeated Katie Taylor, albeit controversially, some years back and is the current World Champion at her weight. Sinead comes up against Germany's Ukrika Brugner tomorrow.

Debbie Rogers (like Taylor from Bray BC) will meet Nina Smith of Chadwell St Mary's the all action English champion, later today. Smith is one of GB's elite training squad for the London Games and will prove a tough opponent for Rogers.

    Irish Team and Management:

Director of Boxing: Dominic O’Rourke, Team Manager: Tony Davitt, Coaches: Peter Taylor & Zuar Antia, 51Kg: Debbie Rogers (Bray BC), 60Kg: Katie Taylor (Bray BC), 64Kg: Alanna Murphy (Eastside), 75Kg: Sinead Kavanagh. (Drimnagh)

    Draw

    August 4th (Last 16)

51Kg: Debbie Rogers (Ireland) v Nina Smith (England)

60Kg: Katie Taylor (Ireland) v Jennifer Miranda (Spain)

    August 5th (Q/Finals)

64Kg: Alanna Murphy (Ireland) v Gulsum Tatar (Turkey)

75Kg: Sinead Kavanagh (Ireland) v Ulrika Brugner (Germany)

Herewith courtesy AIBA.org some further background info on these Championships which started today in Hungary.

"Four World Champions will be fighting at the European Union Women's Championships, in Keszthely, Hungary.
It will be one of the last tournaments, next to the Panamerican Women's Championships, when a female tournament will be held in eleven weight classes because of the new categories that will be launched from September 1, when the lowest weight category, 46kg, will disappear.

Twenty nations will be competing in the event: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, England, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Spain, Turkey, and host nation Hungary.

Among the EU member nations only Slovakia, Slovenia, and the Baltic countries Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania are not sending a team to Keszthely, while Norway and Switzerland have strong female boxers but neither of them are EU members.

Unfortunately one of Europe's top women's boxing nations, Sweden, will not be travelling to Hungary, preferring instead to concentrate solely on the 6th edition of the AIBA Women's World Championships which will start on September 9th in Barbados.

Altogether 119 boxers have entered the competition, making the event the same size as last year's European Championships in Nikolayev, where 113 athletes competed. The three new Olympic weight classes of 51, 60 and 75kg will be really popular in Keszthely among the female boxers as expected.

The local spectators will be treated to performances from the world's top boxers, such as two-time AIBA World Champion Irish star Katie Taylor, who was awarded the title of best women boxer in 2008.
Turkey claimed two first places at the last AIBA World Championships, with Gulsum Tatar taking gold at 64kg and super heavyweight Semsi Yarali also taking the world championship title in Ningbo. Both boxers are again included in the Turkish team.

The best Hungarian boxer, two-time World Champion 29-year-old Maria Kovacs, has moved down into middleweight due the chance to qualify for the London Olympic Games. In the home ring her target is of course the gold medal.

The EU Championships will be an excellent opportunity to prepare for the AIBA Women's World Championships, where a record number of boxers have registered.

Katie Taylor moved to within three bouts of retaining her European Union lightweight title with an
8-0 decision over Spain's Jennifer Miranda in Keszthely, Hungary today.

But her Bray BC team mate-mate Debbie Rogers - who was 3-0 up at one stage - bowed out of the tournament at the last-16 stage following a 4-3 reversal to English flyweight Nina Smith.

Taylor, who forced Miranda into a standing count in the second round of today's 60Kg duel, will meet Danuse Dilhofava of the Czech Republic - who she beat at the 2008 AIBA World Championships in China - in Thursday's quarter final.

Is there any homepage for this tournament with fight schedules and results posted?

Not that I can trace. Here is a link to the OFFICIAL website of the E.U.B.C which is as you can see "extremely poor" (unless I am missing something).

    http://eubc-boxing.org/

Hopefully it will improve as week goes by.

You can also find limited info about the tournament but "delayed" by a day or more on the official site of the World Governing body:

    www.aiba.org

Of course it MAY be that some of our Hungarian speakers on the boards.ie site could identify a Hungarian media site that has live updates eg: newspaper/tv/radio station. All the above shows is that even the official EUBC site is not supporting womens boxing - even the adverts are still from the Men's championship in Moscow months ago....very very poor

The Hungarian Boxing authority does have a website, in Hungarian language naturally, but as of last night no results or programme schedule just a very brief reference to event taking place....

    from IABA.ie Bernard O'Neill - P.R.O

Katie Taylor advanced to the semi-finals of the European Union Women's Championships after Danusa Dilhofava of the Czech Republic was disqualified in round three of their quarter-final in Keszthely, Hungary today.

Dilhofava, who was beaten by Taylor at the 2008 AIBA World Championships, received a public warning for her unsporting antics in the third and then received boxing's equivalent of a red card in the same round.Taylor was 4-1 up.

The Bray woman will now face Juliana Rocha in Friday's semi-final. But while Taylor progressed, Alanna Murphy and Sinead Kavanagh bowed out despite magnificent performances.

Murphy, of the East Side BC in Belfast, produced a fantastic display despite losing 4-0 out to reigning AIBA World light-welterweight champion Gulsum Tatar of Turkey.

And Drimnagh BC ace Kavanagh dominated all four rounds versus Ulrika Brukner but lost 2-1. The German middleweight earned her two points after Kavanagh received a harsh public warning for slapping in the second round."

So Katie Taylor flies the Irish flag again tomorrow against the Portuguese, Juliana Rocha, but highly promising displays also from both Alanna and Sinead. Yesterday Debbie Rogers fought a gallant fight against GB's Nina Smith so a fine tournament thus far for the Irish team ....

Another fine performance this evening from Katie Taylor as she powered her way through to her 3rd successive European Union championship final with a convincing 9-3 decision over Karolina Graczyk (Zagłębie Konin),twice a silver medallist here at 57kg. In the final she now meets - once more - the Bulgarian Denica Eliseeva whom she defeated in last year's final on an 8-1 scoreline. Katie won her first European Union title in Liverpool in 2008 and repeated the feat in Bulgaria a year ago. Can she strike Gold again, for Ireland, this weekend?

Katie Taylor won her third European Union Championships gold medal in a row after recording a resounding victory over Denica Eliseeva of Bulgaria in today's lightweight final in Keszthely, Hungary.

The 24 year old Bray woman, the current AIBA World and European champion, beat Eliseeva 16-1 in a repeat of the 2009 final which Taylor won 8-1 in Bulgaria.

Today's win was Taylor's 95th from 101 bouts since she claimed victory as a 15 year old in her first contest at the National Stadium in Dublin in 2001.

The win ensured that the 2008 AIBA World female boxer of the year has now claimed an amazing two AIBA World titles, four European golds and three European Union golds in the last six years.

Taylor, who had her dad and coach Peter and Zuar Antia working her corner in Keszthely, scored 37 points en route to gold in Hungary and conceded five in four contests in four days in Hungary.

Peter Taylor said: "Katie came out here to prepare for next month's World Championships in Barbados and we're delighted with her performance. She was always in control in the final and we're thrilled with the win."

Taylor was part of a four strong squad in Hungary, which included Alanna Murphy, Debbie Rogers and Sinead Kavanagh.

IABA Director of boxing Dominic O'Rourke added: "Katie was absolutely magnificent. We were very pleased with the performances of the entire squad. They gave it 100% out here. They represented their country with pride and we can't ask for anymore than that."

Phenomenal performance. To lose 5 points in an entire tournament against europes best is incredible and shows katies dominance. Hopefully she can keep it up and get the olympic gold she deserves

Just to make the point that the computer scoring in am boxing can be very
wayward; so I wouldn't think too much of what Katie scored and conceded.
Main thing is that again she wins and wins well.

Also, if she's good enough she will win gold. The competiton globally is very
strong now, so nothing is a given here. Nobody "deserves" the gold, the best person
    should be the medal winner.

As I am sure some eagle eyed readers will have spotted if you have been following these Championships either on boards.ie or via RTE, IABA.ie,Examiner,Independent, irish Times or Belfast Telegraph there has been some confusion re who KT fought and defeated in the semi final.

Agency reports reaching Ireland and used by the Irish media suggested her opponent was "Julia Rocha" of Poland. In fact Julia is a young Portuguese woman anyway (from the Boa Vista club) who was eliminated in the early rounds. That apart it is highly unlikely that she would have got 3 points against KT. so who did she fight?
Clearly it was Karolina Graczyk the extremely talented former 57kg silver medallist in 2008 and 2009 who has - like many others - with the Olympics in mind, moved up to the 60kg category and thus a 9-3 verdict in KT's favour was just about what one would have anticipated.

I have managed to get the full official results from Hungary and as you will see it was the Turkish team who dominated these Championships once again. The English women got 3 silvers through Savannah Marshall,Chantelle Cameron and the relatively unknown Vesna Fisher. Savannah Marshall, still a teenager, most assuredly is one to watch for the future and is a good bet for a medal in London 2012,if she keeps on progressing at the current rate.

Great performances from the Irish girls in the 2nd European Youth and Junior Championships in Calais-Sangatte which ended tonight.

Katie Rowland from Geesala BC, County Mayo , was extremely unlucky to lose tonight's Final of the European Youth Championship at Calais-Sangatte. Russia's Viktoriya Kuleshova, ( sister of AIBA World bronze medallist, Alexander) was adjudged the winner, on count back after their fight ended 4-4. It must have been a very close call for the judges.

This afternoon, St George's BC boxer, Christine Gargan was well beaten 12-1 by her Russian opponent Svetlana Dimitrieva in the final of the 46kg Junior event.

Speaking after today's finals, Irish coach Pat McDonagh, remarked:-

"I thought that Katie did enough to win her final today, but it just didn't go our way and to tell the truth we're gutted" , said McDonagh, Rowland's coach at the Geesala BC. "Katie was absolutely brilliant. She kept pushing forward and she never took a backward step.

"I thought she'd get it when it went to a count-back, but it unfortunately it wasn't to be. Katie , Christine (Gargan) and the entire Irish squad can be very proud of the way they represented Ireland".

"This is their first major international tournament and to be bringing home six medals speaks for itself.. Every member of the squad showed tremendous heart and courage and they can be very proud of what they have achieved against some of the best in the world at this level.

"Our girls also showed that Irish women's boxing is now a force to be reckoned with internationally. The medals are a bonus - a very welcome bonus. To win two silver and four bronze medals at this level is a magnificent achievement by any standard."

Despite the disappointments of today this has indeed been a remarkable performance from this young and relatively inexperienced Irish team especially considering that several of their opponents in the Youth event had represented their country at the recent Women's Senior World Championships in Barbados.

Nicole Meli (Immaculata BC,Belfast), Mikaela Walsh (Holy Family BC,Belfast), Sarah Close (Abbey BC,Belfast ) and Clare Grace (Callan BC,Kilkenny) all claimed bronze at the tournament to ensure that Ireland's 10-strong squad secured a very impressive haul of six medals from France.

So well done to the Irish girls and their Coaches and Management in Calais and to Anja Norman, Development Manager of Irish womens boxing for past five years. The future is bright.

The first ever Women's Youth and Junior world championships are taking place this week in Antalya Turkey with a strong Irish team in both events.
Belfast's Nicole Meli had Ireland's first win in Sunday's opening session.

An impressive win today for Mayo’s Katie Rowland who boxes out of the Geesala Club in the last 16 of the 51kg Youth event at the 1st AIBA Women’s Youth and Junior Championships currently underway at the Kepez Belediye Kapali Spor Salonu arena in Antalya.

Katie, a Silver medallist at last year’s European Championships today defeated Damira Mussina of Kazakhstan 18 – 9 . The Irish girl won all 4 rounds – (4-2)( 5-3)(6-2)(3-2) and is now but one bout away from at least a bronze medal .

Sweden’s fine young prospect Frida Stenholm is also still in the competition as is Vietnam’s Thi Yen Nguyen so the Geesala boxer will need to be at her very best if she is to reach the semi-finals.

Holy Family feather weight,Michaela Walsh was Ireland’s first winner of Easter Monday when she convincingly defeated the Tajikistan titleholder , Farzona Karimova by 25 – 12.

Now awaiting Ms Walsh in the quarter final is France’s Celie Vastine of the Formetot club in Normandie, in a repeat of last year’s European clash when Michaela emerged on top 7-0.

Walsh was joined in the last eight by Oliwia Samsonow, the Cavan youngster who defeated Haya Alsaleh, the first young Syrian woman boxer to enter a major competition.

Samsonow won convincingly 34-14 but great to see Syria allowing young women to compete and the experience gained here will be beneficial in the future. Oliwia won all four rounds with ease .

Callan’s Clare Grace was another Irish Youth team member who had a fine win on Monday – no doubt about her superiority against the Indian titleholder Tokas Heena, with Grace emerging a clear winner on a 27 – 7 score line India did gain some ‘revenge’ later though as Sarah Close of the Abbey BC lost to Minu Basumatary of India., by 2 points 19-17,in the 64kg weight division. A very good performance though from Sarah albeit she lost narrowly.

Shauna Browne lost to Turkey's Gamnze Basar in this afternoon's 57kg lightweight contest, 24-9 and again here the Turkish titleholder in front of her home crowd always dominated the contest despite a game performance by the 16 years old coached by Martin Fennessy at the Clonmel BC.

Tuesday and Wednesday will see the Irish Junior squad entering a crucial two days in Antalya, with six members of the squad all within one bout of bronze.

Hannah Carthy, Lisa Buckley, Christine Gargan, Nicole Meli, Shannon Power, and Austeja Accuieta will all be involved in last eight bouts on Tuesday and Wednesday.

We wish them well in their respective bouts.

    from iaba.ie:

Ireland are guaranteed at least one bronze medal from the 1st AIBA Women's Youth and Junior World Championships in Turkey following Michaela Walsh's magnificent quarter-final win this afternoon.

The Holy Family BC Belfast featherweight marched into the World Youth semi-finals after recording a 16-6 victory over Celine Vastine of France at the Kepez Belediye Kapili Sport Salonu venue in Antalya in a repeat of the 2010 European Youth Championships clash which Walsh won 7-0 in France.

Walsh will now meet Ornella Wahner of Germany in Thursday's 57Kg semi-final.

Wahner beat Walsh 6-0 in the 2010 European Youth semi-finals, but Walsh, who lists her Holy Family BC club mate Paddy Barnes, the current European and Commonwealth champ, as her favourite boxer, says she's improving all the time.

"I'm over the moon with today's win. It was a tough fight, I beat her last time. I watched her yesterday and she has improved and it was a tough one today. She (Wahner) beat me the last time, but I've come on a lot since then."

Round scoring - Walsh was boxing out of the red corner.

    R1: 2-0
    R2: 6-3
    R3: 5-2
    R4: 3-1

Meanwhile, while Walsh was celebrating there was dissapointment for Callan BC welterweight Clare Grace.

Grace was hoping to reach the welterweight semi-final, but despite a brave showing lost out 22-10 to Germany's Darlene Joerling.

Round scoring - Grace was boxing out of the red corner.

    R1: 6-3
    R2: 6-4
    R3: 5-2
    R4: 5-1

Earlier, Hannah Carthy was agonisingly edged out at the quarter-final stage.

The Kilkenny light-flyweight lost out 10-9 to Poland's Zawal Kamila at the last eight stage. The Pole took the first two rounds but Carthy came storming back in the third but just couldn't find the equalising point from a third round fight back which IABA Director of Boxing Dominic O'Rourke described as brilliant.

Round scoring - Carthy was boxing out of the blue corner.

    R1: 3-2
    R2: 4-1
    R3: 3-6

Lisa Buckley was 10-2 down in her quarter-final with Nikolette Csosz of Hungary when the bout was stopped in the second.

"Hannah produced a fantastic final round and she very nearly turned it around. It was a brilliant performance in the third from her and she can be very proud of the way she boxed. Lisa boxed well in the first round but the Hungarian came on very strong in the second, " said Dominic O'Rourke.

Round scoring - Buckley was boxing out of the blue corner

    R1: 4-2
    R2: 6-0

Update from SportsNewsIreland on the Quarter finals.... with report later this morning on Irish performances in semi-finals:-

    "
Katie Rowland & Austeja Accueita win in Antalya
    Michael O'Neill, 27 April:

Geesala BC’s 17 years old Katie Rowland and Donegal’s Austeja Accueita ,who boxes out of the Finn Valley BC, both won their quarter finals at the 1st IABA World youth and junior championships in Antalya yesterday and thus when added to yesterday’s victory for the Holy Family BC’s Michaela Walsh, it guarantees Ireland a minimum of three bronze medals at these Championships – a great boost for Irish women’s boxing .In Thursday’s semi-final, Walsh faces Germany’s Ornella Wahler, who is tipped to be the German representative at the 2012 Olympics in London.
Rowland had to box at her very best to overcome Thi Yen Nguyen of Vietnam 16-13 in today’s flyweight quarter-final. She took the opening round 2-1 and the 2nd by 5-3 then shared the third and fourth rounds 4-4 and 5-5. The Mayo girl now faces Swedish champion Frida Stenholm in Thursday’s 51Kg semi-final. Stenholm is her country’s Senior champion and this promises to be one of the best bouts in the competition to date.
The first Irish winner of the day was Austeja Accueita who came up against the much fancied Indian champion, Marthamma Sattivada . After rounds of 3-3 6-3 and 5-2 in the Junior event, the Donegal girl emerged victorious on a 14-8 score line which accurately reflected the her superiority.
She now trades leather with Agnes Alexiusson of the Värnamo Boxningklubb in Thursday’s 60Kg semi-final .
Christine Gargan, Nicole Meli ,Shannon Power and Oliwia Samsonow all suffered defeats though putting up brave performances .
Belfasts’s Gargan, went down 16-11 to Vietnamese light-flyweight Thi Phoung Pham in their 48Kg World Junior quarter final clash.
Meli from the Immaculata club lost 15-5 to Dutch flyweight Alicia Holzken. She had battled well but could not pull back a six point deficit in the final round.
Cavan’s Oliwia Samsonow, who had won yesterday, was on the receiving end today of a convincing 33-10 win by Hungarian favourite Lili Vary.
Clonmel’s Shannon Power meantime held a 4-3 lead after an excellent first round but as the fight progressed another Hungarian champion, Kornelia Nagy got the upper hand and finally emerged victorious 14- 9 in their 54kg bout.

Irish boxers have collected three bronze medals at the 1st AIBA Women’s Youth and Junior championships which continued yesterday in Antalya.

In the morning’s session, Austeja Accueita from the Finn Valley ABC in Stranolar, Co. Donegal lost out in her World Junior semi-final against Swedish titleholder ,Agnes Alexiusson . The Swede won as convincingly as the 16-3 decision suggests and in Saturday’s final she will meet Oxana Paltceva of Russia.

A great achievement nonetheless for the Donegal girl to win a bronze medal in these Championships.

"I thought that Austeja boxed well” , said IABA Director of Boxing Dominic O'Rourke, who was in Antalya . "She could have got a few more scores. We are pleased with her performance and to win a bronze medal is an incredible achievement for a young girl and she can be very proud of that."

In the evening’s bouts, Geesala BC’s Katie Rowland and Michaela Walsh of the Holy Family Club in Belfast had to settle for bronze like Austeja. Walsh came very close to causing an upset against the powerful Ornella Wahner, the German favourite for the title eventually winning 18-17 over four, two minute rounds. Round one ended 3-3 then Walsh raced ahead winning the 2nd 7-3. That however was not enough as Wahner took round 3 by 7-4 and the final round 5-3. The winner now meet’s England’s Charley Davison in the final.

Katie Rowland produced a fine final round but could not overcome Frida Stenholm, the Swedish and Scandinavian champion who eventually won 14-11. Stenholm won the first 3 rounds 3-2 5-3 and 4-3 and though Katie came through to take the 4th 3-2 it was ‘too little too late’. That said to add a bronze in the World Youth championships to the silver she won in Calais in 2010 is highly encouraging . A fine future lays ahead.

The Irish losses tyesterday means that there are no more Irish competitors left in the Championships but all of the team came feel proud of their efforts in this most competitive of all Championships.

Whilst it was the Indians, Russians and Swedes who dominated the 1st AIBA Youth and Junior Women’s World Championships which ended in Antalya at the weekend , congratulations also to the three Irish medallists, Mayo’s Katie Rowland, Donegal’s Austeja Accuieta and Antrim’s Michaela Walsh who deservedly won bronze medals thus continuing a great run for Irish boxers in major international events in recent years.

Their success augurs well for the future of Women’s Boxing in Ireland and much of the praise must go to coaches John McCormack and Al Fayden, to Team Manager Anna Moore, Director of Boxing Dominic O’Rourke and the IABA’s National Development Manager, Anja Norman.

Walsh and Accueita were beaten by eventual World champions Ornella Wahner of Germany and Agnes Alexiusson of Sweden.
Wahner beat England's Charley Davison in the featherweight final and Alexiusson beat Russia's Oxana Paltceva in the World Junior final.

Sweden's Frida Stenholm, conqueror of Katie Rowland in the last four, lost out to China's Yibo Zhang in the World Youth flyweight final.

Irish boxing fans in or near Belfast will I am sure go along and give a great welcome home to the team and officials The Irish squad are due to arrive home via Belfast International Airport at 9.15pm this evening (May 1st).

India took four Golds in Saturday's finals which indicates a great future for the country in women’s boxing. Russia as usual were the main winners but great praise also to Sweden who took three Golds and three Silvers home at the end of a highly successful championships.

Among the Russians who struck Gold was Anastasia Belyakova in the 60kg division. She was heavily defeated by Katie Taylor in last year’s World Seniors but at 18 is a great prospect for the future and it will be interesting to see who eventually represents Russia at the London 2012 Games as team captain Sofya Ochigava is only recently returned following serious injury whilst Belyakova is improving with every bout.

    Hi all

Thought you might like an update on today's events in Katowice as I've not seen anything on boards.ie so far,and there will be very little info on mainstream Irish media sites I guess. Here goes:-

    courtesy SportsNewsIreland.com

    " By Michael O’Neill

Katie Taylor this evening edged closer to a fourth European Union title in Katowice as she had a comfortable 16-5 win over 30 years old , Italian champion Marzia Davide in their quarter final bout at the Spodek Municipal Sports Hall in Katowice, Southern Poland.
Taylor was always too strong for the Italian who had reached the quarter final stage with a narrow 9-8 victory over Maike Klueners, the German champion, whom Taylor defeated in Youghal early in May.

Davide, from Pontecagno just outside Naples is a ‘veteran’ of the World boxing scene having gained a Silver medal at the 2002 World Championship, was European Champion in 2003 and 2004, gained a Silver at the European Union event of 2008 and won her native Italian championships six times. At the 2010 World championships in Barbados she lost to Yanzi Yang in the quarter final at 57kg.As a teenager she also won silver at the European Light Contact Kick Boxing championships before turning to boxing as her preferred sport.

In Friday’s semi-final, the three times World champion from Bray meets Kings Heath BC fighter and former kick boxing champion, Chantelle Cameron, representing Great Britain who defeated Spain’s Jenifer Miranda in Katowice, 19-9.
In her last bout Cameron had overwhelmed Croatian titleholder Marina Zovko 30:7 .In that encounter the Northampton lightweight opened by giving Marina a standing count and the score at the end of round one was 8:1.

The bell at the end of round two saw her move into an 11 point lead before confirming her superiority in the final two rounds, and finishing strongly to end the bout with a 30:7 score line in her favour.Today’s win against Miranda was equally impressive.

Thursday’s remaining quarter finals involving Irish boxers:
    48kg: Lynne McEnery(Ireland)) v Lydia Boussaida (France)
57kg: Dervla Duffy (Ireland) v Sandra Kruk (Poland)
64kg: Kelly Harrington (Ireland) v Oliwia Luczak (Poland)

Kelly Harrington of the Corinthians club is an extremely good fighter but would need a ‘best ever performance’ to overcome the host nation’s Oliwia Luczak, who lives in Germany and has been both German and Polish champion on many occasions as well as enjoying success at European and World Championships. Dervla Duffy from the Ryston Club in Kildare is the Irish representative at 57kg – she too comes up against an experienced Pole in Sandra Kruk.

Kruk has previously met – and lost to – Katie Taylor in the European Union championships in Liverpool 2008, the first time I had seen Taylor in competitive action. She ‘demolished’ Kruk in 45 seconds by which time the Pole had already taken two standing counts. But both before and after that fight Kruk had proved to be a fine boxer in Europe. Duffy is improving with every fight. This one could be close but it would be an upset if Duffy were to beat Kruk in her native Poland.

Waterford’s Lynne McEnery who boxes out of the St Paul’s Club was also a noted kick boxing champion winning several European Championship medals before turning to boxing two and a half years ago. In Dungarvan recently she scored a fine,if unexpected win over Chinese title holder Yujie Luo.
Tomorrow she meets 21 years old French champion, Lydia Boussaida from the Oxygéné boxing club (IDF). If McEnery fights as she did in Dungarvan the Irish elite titleholder is capable of pulling off an upset win here.

As a result of Katie Taylor's win tonight, Ireland are "guaranteed" at least three (bronze) medals as also through to the semi-finals are Bray BC's LAOISE TRAYNOR and Paulstown,Kilkenny boxer LAURAGH O'NEILL.

Further updates during the week. That Taylor v Cameron fight could prove VERY interesting...as the 20yrs old Cameron is in great form just now. Yesterday of course Taylor defeated Denitza Eliseeva who had been awarded that "dubious" 5-1 verdict in Bulgaria when most neutrals felt Taylor was at least 15 points in front...Strange they should have met in first round this year as they met in last year's Final in Hungary.

Thanks for the updates Mike; I was just about to go online to follow this s my father was asking how Taylor and the Irish were getting on. Great to see other Irish girls getting success.

Taylor into European Union title final
    Michael O'Neill, 3 June 2011

    katie-taylor-B-+2.jpg
    spacer312.png

Katie Taylor produced one of her best ever performances to defeat England’s Chantelle Cameron 28-10 in today’s semi-final bout in the Womens European Union Championships in Katowice.
Cameron never had a chance to settle into her stride as Taylor raced to a 5-2 first round lead and despite the heroic efforts of the young Northampton former kick boxing star, there was no stopping the three times World and four times European Champion who now meets Poland’s Karolina Graczyck in
tomorrow’s final. The Polish champion today defeated Finland’s Mira Potkonen in the other semi-final.
The IABA’s Director of Boxing, Dominic O’Rourke, in Katowice later paid this tribute to Taylor:
“Katie was a different class. It’s the best I’ve seen her perform. She was absolutely brilliant,”
Though it was the Bray star’s third fight in four days, she dominated this fight throughout and having seen today’s fight , I can but agree with O’Rourke.
At tomorrow’s presentation, bronze medals will be awarded to Bray’s Laoise Traynor and Lauragh O’Neill from the Paulstown club in Kilkenny .
In the final bouts of the first session today , Traynor went down 20-8 in the welterweight division to the vastly more experienced Marichelle De Jong of Holland whilst O’Neill lost her light-heavyweight semi-final 26-10 against Timea Nagy , the champion of Hungary.
Neither result was unexpected but their involvement in these championships will considerably help them in future . What is clear from this week is that Ireland’s squad need many more fights against International opposition at smaller tournaments.
The upcoming Haringey Box Cup tournament in London sees a number of Irish competitors represent a Munster select team but it would be great if the IABA could send more stars of the future to Haringey inc such as Katie Rowland, Michaela Walsh, Ceire Smith,Lauragh O’Neill and Laoise Traynor .
In addition as a start point these boxers would also benefit from regular international matches against England, Scotland and Wales . The Association has always funded young Irish male boxers to attend tournaments worldwide – now is the time to invest in the female stars of tomorrow.
Katie Taylor will not be around forever !

A disappointing day for the Irish competitors in today’s remaining quarter finals of the 2011 European Union Championships in Katowice.

St Paul’s Waterford boxer, Lynne McEnery lost out 17-11 against the champion of France, Lydia Boussaida . McEnery – as always – gave of her best but the more experienced Boussaida was good value for her win. That said the valuable experience gained by McEnery will stand her in good stead for the future.

In this evening’s session, Ryston’s Dervla Duffy and Kelly Harrington of the Corinthians club, both bowed out of this year’s tournament, also at the quarter final stage. Poland’s Sandra Kruk, a former European silver medallist , was the winner here following a fourth round stoppage.

Kelly Harrington meantime put up a brave performance against the much more experienced Oliwia Luczak , like Kruk cheered on by the noisy home support in Katowice. The verdict? - 19-12 in favour of the Pole who though resident in Germany has won major European and World title medals for her homeland over many years.

Katie Taylor, 25 today , is aiming for her fourth EU title on the trot, when she meets the highly promising Chantelle Cameron of England in tomorrow’s semi-final. This will be one of the toughest encounters faced by Taylor since that great World semi-final battle against Queen Underwood in Barbados last September. Cameron has made astonishing progress in the past 12 months and clearly the Taylor camp is expecting a close encounter.

“"I'm expecting a tough fight ,against Cameron. She's beaten some good opponents out here and her confidence will be high" .

Laoise Traynor and Lauragh O'Neill will also fly the flag for Ireland in Friday's semi-finals. They, like Taylor, are guaranteed at least bronze. Traynor from the Bray BC meets the leading Dutch fighter at 69kg Marichelle De Jong whilst at 81kg Lauragh O'Neill from Paulstown comes up against Timea Nagy from Hungary. It would be a major upset if either of the Irish girls were to win against much more experienced opponents.

Success today for England’s Natasha Jonas and Nikki Adams but defeats for Charley Davison, Lucy O’Connor and Savannah Marshall.

Katie Taylor won her fourth European Union Gold medal at the Spodek Sports Hall in Katowice today with a convincing 25 – 9 win over the host nation’s Karolina Graczyk in front of a Polish audience who had come along to support all 10 of their fighters on finals day.

There was little for the Polish fans to cheer for though in the 60kg final as Bray’s three times World, four times European champion added a fourth successive European Union title to her impressive , ever growing collection of Gold medals.

Taylor was in charge from the outset here and by the end of round one was 5-1 ahead. She continued in the second, where she left off and there was more of the same in round three with the athletic Taylor well in control and 17-6 ahead at the end of the third.

Hardly surprisingly Graczyk gave her all in the fourth and final round but another fine round from the Irish champion who added another 8 points whilst only conceding 3 meant that Taylor was champion once more – on a score line of 25-9.

The other Irish medallists, Kilkenny’s Lauragh O’Neill and Taylor’s Bray club mate, Laoise Traynor were also presented with their bronze medals today.
So another Golden homecoming for Katie Taylor when the team arrives at Dublin Airport at 23.30 tonight. Next is the European Championships in Rotterdam in mid-October .

Gold today also for England’s Nicola Adams against the Polish champion and current European champion Karolina Michalczuk in the 51kg final.

After today’s final, IABA’s Director of Boxing Dominic O’Rourke added :”Katie was absolutely brilliant. She produced another fantastic performance today. She showed great balance and coordination in the final. She peaked over the last two days at these Championships and we’re thrilled with the win.”

A delighted Irish Team Manager, Majella Loftus paid this tribute to Taylor : “”Katie boxed out of her skin. She was 5-1 ahead after the first round and she just kept getting stronger and stronger after that. It was a fantastic all round performance.”

The Polish "Presidents Award" for best boxer of the tournament went to Katie Taylor following her great victories over Chantelle Cameron and Karolina Graczyk.

Poland won 4 gold medals, England and Turkey 2 each, Hungary and Ireland 1 apiece.

If we are to believe Dominic O'Rourke (IABA President) then Taylor seems to be boxing better than ever. Let us hope the standard is held for the next 12-15 months.

    Hi Bren

Some good photos here from the European Union final Graczyk v Taylor followed by a link to video from "Bokser.org" of the flight itself.

"Bokser.org" provided excellent coverage of the finals and is a good site generally for all things boxing.
