Fillings; White fillings vs Amalgam fillings(metal?/black?)

I never knew that it was possible to get white fillings until recently. Most my fillings are like that in the pic below. The next time I need fillings im thinking of getting white fillings. Have you ever gotten white fillings? Are they deerer than other types? I read that they were. Any other info on them?
