Worth Fixing?

    Hi,

I have an 01 Avensis 1.6, which no longer has a working engine. I was planning on trading up next year, but the sudden demise of the engine may have changed matters.

Prior to the engine fiasco, I would have expected a tradein value of about 2k off the forecourt price of a more recent (not new) model. With a bust engine, I dread to think - maybe a few hundred quid?

I don't have price on the replacement of the engine yet. Nor do I know what I'd get for it on tradein. My question to you knowledgable petrolheads is - should I even bother repairing it, or just trade it in as is?

...for a more recent Avensis, or something like that - maybe 06 vintage.

The engine exploded, seems like something came loose and got sucked in. This is an ex engine.

It will certainly be worth less as a trade in than actually turning up with cash & buying a car straight. Even with the a working engine, any garage would be giving you little or nothing for it so you are better buying straight & worry about the avensis seperately. You could stick it in donedeal or whatever & get a few quid for it or alternatively get an engine as cheap as you can but whatever you do, dont head into a garage & pay screen price less a few hundred for your trade as they will in most instances be fleecing you that way.

Whats it worth now? weigh its current valuec against its trade in value less repairs and there your answer.

    Hi Derv,

It's hard to answer that. I've been advised that its current trade in value is 500 - 1,000. I don't have an estimate yet on the repair cost, cause there aren't a lot of spare engines out there. I have no idea what its value after repair would be either. I presume it would be something of a discount on its value with the original engine, but I don't know. Which was pretty much the reason I asked here.

Also, when garages talk about "cash price", does paying by laser count? Or would I have to go to the bank with a bag first?

Cash price usually means not as part of a trade in.

If it still has a NCT and you're buying a new car...not too sure on if you could use it for the scrapage scheme worth 1500 that way though.

Cash price means not bought on credit or traded in as far as I know. Be that cash laser cheque bank draft it's all the same I would imagine.

Yeah thats right. Your not trading a vehicle or you don't have to get finance. You have the money yourself albeit on laser bank draft etc etc and are willing to part with it there and then to get the best deal!
