UPC Pixelation Problems

Have a UPC HD box connected to a 47 inch Samsung TV, of late there is a pretty obvious issue with pixelation on screen on regular channels rather than the HD channels.

Does anyone have any experience of this or ideas of what might be the cause?

    hi there,

I have noticed something similar. I have the standard digital (silver box) and the picture is perfect on a 42" plasma. I simply swapped the silver box with the black non HD Digital plus to test what it was like. I was surprised at the loss of picture quality.

I can say that it was like watching streamed tv on a laptop. The picture was very pixelated looking. I even changed the High RGB to Standard picture in the settings and it was still poor. What would this be due to? Is the silver box a better box? or perhaps the black box may be trying to upscale the picture (even though its a non HD Box)?

I wouldnt be happy permanently swapping the silver box for the black one if this is quality of picture they give.

By pixalation do you mean degraded quality of picture or do you mean the picture is breaking up, like a bad signal?

If its degraded quality of signal then a lot of it is down to the size of the TV and the fact that SD content looks atrocious on a HD LCD TV anyway. I have a 40" 1080p Bravia and most of the time I feel I would be better off selling it and picking up a decent sized CRT TV second hand somewhere.

That said, from my experience, I think the UPC signal is quite weak and doesnt help in this regard. I have seen a Sky SD box hooked up to a HD TV and the quality loss doesnt seem to be anywhere near as bad as it is with UPC.

Have you your box hooked up to the TV using HDMI as opposed to SCART? Also, if there is a setting on your TV for Full Pixal Mode then try turning it on. It might introduce very small black bars (like a couple of cm max) at the top and side of the picture, but in my eyes it improves the picture somewhat.

Cheers for the advice lads, took a look around the menu and stuff last night and can't see anything. The pixelation (by this i mean the picture becomes blocky and distorted) is fairly cat, it's worse quality now than 20 years ago on Cablelink with a 24" CRT.

Might give UPC a call but doubt it will do much good.

Im not sure there is much they can do but if they do give you any good advise then please report back as Id be very interested to hear it!

One thing Ive noticed helps a little on my tv is to turn the brightness down. I have a Theatre Mode button which turns down the brightness (and I think changes to 24fps for movies) which I think helps a little. Obviously the downside is that the tv is darker!
