Landlord and Claiming Tax

I would like to enquire about something before I approach Citizens Information and Threshold with regards to this. Our landlord is absolutely terrible - moving people in without our consent, letting his sons stay over without telling us and giving them keys, not fixing appliances etc. As a result of this, most of us are considering moving.

However something I have heard previously is that if a landlord isn't paying tax on income generated from renting that is in excess of €10,000 a year, that they could be fined for this? We have worked it out and the total rent comes to just over €19,000.

Are you claiming Tax Relief on rent paid ? If you are then it's a safe bet the revenue are aware of your landlords rental income.

No, we're not claiming any Tax Relief and the landlord is actually refusing to give us any sort of a rent book. He was at the house today and refused point blank.

Claim the rental Tax Relief - you are entitled to it and you can claim even if your landlord refuses to give his PPS/RSI number. The amount of relief is piddling small but it was introduced to gather info on landlords not declaring rental income.

Cheers for the info. How would I go about claiming Tax Relief? But is there also any truth in the landlord getting fined if it turns out he isn't paying tax on rental income?

If he had undeclared rental income then he may have to pay all the tax he owes on it plus interest plus penalties - could amount to a tidy sum ;)

Check out the revenue website for details of claiming the relief - the form takes 30 seconds to fill out.

Thank you very much. I really hope it is a tidy sum, because he really has been such a terrible landlord. He moved in a schizophrenic who slowly got worse over time until it got to a point where we lived in fear and when we tried to complain, it fell on deaf ears. The guy was only evicted after he flooded the place causing some serious damage to the house.

I will check out the Revenue website as well.. would I be in the right to also check out the Citizens Information and Threshold to see what they could do? I don't want to see other people subjected to what we went through.
