From Chris Keyser and Amy Lippman, the creators of "Party of Five"; Marc Webb, the director of "(500) Days of Summer"; and creator Kyle Killen, comes LONE STAR, a provocative soap set against the backdrop of big Texas oil.
ROBERT/BOB ALLEN (newcomer James Wolk) is a charismatic and brilliant schemer who has meticulously constructed two lives in two different parts of Texas. He’s juggling two identities and two women in two very different worlds – all under one mountain of lies.
As "Bob," he lives in Houston and is married to CAT (Adrianne Palicki, "Friday Night Lights"), the beautiful daughter of CLINT (Jon Voight, 24, "Midnight Cowboy"), the patriarch of an ultra-wealthy Texas oil family. More than 400 miles away in the suburban west Texas town of Midland, he's "Robert," living a second life with his sweet, naïve girlfriend, LINDSAY (Eloise Mumford, "Mercy," "Law & Order: SVU").
In Midland, he plays the perfect boyfriend while secretly bilking local investors of their savings. In Houston, he’s a devoted husband, charming Cat and her family to cement his position in the rich family business he aims to clean out.
Bob has lived both lives successfully for years without arousing any suspicions…so far. While one brother-in-law, DREW (Bryce Johnson, "Popular," "The Mentalist"), admires Bob, his other brother-in-law, TRAMMELL (Mark Deklin, "Nip/Tuck," "Desperate Housewives"), is suspicious of his motives. Bob begins to fear his secret lives may unravel. With the cons closing in on him, Bob is divided by his love for two women; his loyalty to his father and mentor, JOHN (David Keith, "An Officer and a Gentleman," "The Class"); and his respect for his father-in-law, Clint.
Now as he tries to hold his two lives together, while fending off angry investors and the suspicions of those around him, Bob puts it all on the line hoping he can beat the odds, leave the schemes behind and keep two separate relationships afloat.
LONE STAR is a production of 20th Century Fox Television, Depth of Field Productions and Keyser/Lippman Productions. The series is written and executive-produced by Kyle Killen ("The Beaver"). Kerry Kohansky ("In Good Company," "Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist"), Paul Weitz ("A Single Man," "About a Boy"), Chris Keyser ("Party of Five") and Amy Lippman ("In Treatment," "Party of Five") also serve as executive producers. Marc Webb ("(500) Days of Summer") directed the pilot.

Andie MacDowell and Rosa Blasi also joining the cast

^ wtf?....Rosa Blasi is Kaylie's mom on Make It Or Break It??....does this mean she's leaving the show?

I'm not sure about Lonestar, as stated the new Dallas perhaps, but with less cheese...maybe a combo of The OC as well?

Lone Star starts tonight at 9/8c on Fox

In the series premiere of this new drama
James Wolk plays Bob Allen, a con man leading a double life. Half the time, he lives with Lindsay (Eloise Mumford) in the suburbs of west Texas and poses as a model citizen — who's made his money selling the residents of his community shares of a phony oil well. The rest of the time, he lives in Houston and is married to the daughter of a wealthy oil tycoon (Jon Voight), whose company is the target of a lucrative con that Allen and his father have been planning for a long time.

Well made first episode. Liked the music although I aint sure it fits with the programme.

I just watched the pilot and I quite liked it. Although my brain couldn't seperate it from Friday Night Lights, mostly due to it being set in Texas and the presence of Tyra Collette!! (Adrianne Palicki) And it wasn't helped much by the fact that Bobert looks like a young Kyle Chandler. It felt like I was watching Tyra getting jiggy with Coach Taylor :D

I didn't care about the other girl, what's her name? Not Tyra.... I don't know if the whole second wife thing is necessary? Surely him being a con man married to his mark would've been enough of a story line? I don't know, but I'll be watching again.

I loved the music on it, but I'm not sure if it really went with the style of the rest of the show? But it was only the pilot so we'll give it a chance.

Bombed in the ratings, was going to watch the first episode but it will be cancelled by about episode 6 or 7 I'd say, so no point watching it really.

I haven't watched it yet, but the numbers are dire....just woeful, no 9 ep. back order me thinks.

I heard the numbers were bad but WOW, they were really bad!!

Still, FOX allowed Dollhouse to fail for two seasons before cancelling it, surely they should give LoneStar more than one episode!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,383 ✭✭✭S.M.B.

That was Foxs Friday night sci-fi slot of death though.

    Not cancelled (as yet): http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/ustv/news/a278443/fox-not-cancelling-lone-star.html

An agent for a Lone Star writer previously argued that the programme's cancellation could have "a chilling effect on networks taking chances on anything but cookie-cutter shows".

^ a very valid point, i haven't seen it yet but i 100% agree with the point, alot of fans are saying it is more suited to cable.

  • Moderators, Arts Moderators Posts: 23,958 Mod ✭✭✭✭TICKLE_ME_ELMO

Most shows on TV now are procedural cop shows, which get repetitive after a few episodes, or flashy explosions and head ****s.
Lone Star seems to be character driven, which most people aren't interested in. Of course it's only been one episode, which seems a bit soon to be judging it.

Personally I can't believe that 2 and a half men, which is on at the same time, had 14.5 million people watching it!!! It's horrific.

Looks like it will be a miracle if its not cancelled by next week:(

    Indeed; http://tvbythenumbers.com/2010/09/23/lonestar-creator-kyle-killen-throws-up-a-hail-mary-pass/64947

I think if it tanks next Monday it'll be moved to Friday, and Human Target gets moved back to Monday, or HT might be moved to Wednesday....i mean, have they anything else to replace LS with other then HT

It's a pity, I thought the show had promise although I agree it would probably get better audiences on a cable channel - once again it tells a disappointing story about the US viewing public. I wonder would any of the cable channels pick it up, the way TNT took over Southland ...

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 21,634 ✭✭✭✭Richard Dower

^ well i understand, with shows like Jersey Shore doing big numbers the mind boggles...but then it's all down to taste, i like shows alot of others don't....then i disliked those same shows the others watch.

It's all down to personal taste, and what people like differs from person to person, people slate 2.5 Men...but understand the appeal.

Maybe A.M.C will take it over after all there is no Breaking Bad until next summer:(

This was surprisingly decent. The lead was very likeable, which of course he'd need to be, considering the type of character his is and the situation he's got himself into. I'm just not sure if the story has a whole lot of life in it, but I'll hang in till its cancelled at least (couple of weeks at most, right?)

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 21,634 ✭✭✭✭Richard Dower

Serious topic and opinions welcomed. For me i liked the pilot much more then i expected, the critics raved about it...but it flopped, hard. Is it the basic premise?....bigamist conman?, or is it just not entertaining?

On the wrong channel, day or time?....suited to cable?, stupid Americans?

Lets try and get some answers.

    http://popwatch.ew.com/2010/09/24/lone-star-creator-letter/

Is this the reason right here?

Mr Killen, Here’s the problem with your show. Americans are hurting. No one wants to see con men conning people out of money, especially when you add a scene where the con father/son con a hard working man probably out of the last of his savings. No matter who people are in the earnings sphere, in these tough economic times no one wants to see people loose their life savings and/or retirement. THe second reason, women really don’t want to see a man with two wives. Tacky, and hurtful to women. THis is why your show doesn’t work. Wrong time, wrong country.

Thread merged with the existing 'Lone Star' thread.

Keep it to the one thread please Rich!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,383 ✭✭✭S.M.B.

I'd imagine that has something to do with why it's done so poorly.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 44,201 ✭✭✭✭Basq

Cracking pilot.. but it's a shame the numbers are so bad!

Good music too.. but boy, do they have a hard-on for Mumford & Son's! ;)

Thought James Wolk was an absolute revelation in it.. never say him anything but before but a very impressive performance.

    Here's hoping numbers pick up!

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 21,634 ✭✭✭✭Richard Dower

Based on episode 2 - this show is RIP, messy...seeing the father ripping off people tryna rent a house really turned me off, even though they injected a bit of threat to bigamist coman's life with him leaving his phone, his dad and his (other) wife investigating his past....i don't think it's gonna hold water over time and importantly the ratings.

I think the ratings will take a further nosedive later today and it'll either be axed or moved to Friday to burn off.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 12,333 ✭✭✭✭JONJO THE MISER

While its 18-49 rating did rise by 24 percent thanks to DVR use, that's only a difference of 0.2 points -- 1.3 to 1.5. It's still the lowest-rated new show on any of the Big Four networks so far.

It will be cancelled by days end and the remaining episodes moved to another night or F.X i reckon.

  • Moderators, Arts Moderators Posts: 23,958 Mod ✭✭✭✭TICKLE_ME_ELMO

    I liked the second episode.

I see a lot of people saying it's more of a cable show than a network show. They may be right.
Most prime time shows are made up of stand alone episodes with some character development thrown in every now and then. Lone Star is a slow burner.
I think it would be a shame to cancel it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 44,201 ✭✭✭✭Basq

The thing about it is everyone's getting so tied up in the numbers.. this is a new show and it has a loyal following on the Internet, large amount of interest and critical acclaim.

Viewers aren't great.. but the three reasons stated above are enough for most networks to give it a few episodes before pulling the plug.

But this is Fox however.. they aren't LIKE most networks unforunately!

The numbers matter to the Network though. And they don't take into account how many people are watching it that don't have Nielson boxes, or are watching it on line or through other means.

I saw one of the writers on twitter saying that he didn't have a ratings box, and neither did anyone he knew that was involved in the show. So these numbers aren't absolute, but they are pretty influential to the Networks.

Overnights are worse than last week. What is wrong with people?

Why are 14 million people watching Two & A Half Men, and a bunch of Z Listers "dancing" instead of proper TV!!

    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

    Dreadful numbers Jonjo:

    Lone Star (57 minutes)
    - 3.226 million viewers
    - 2.1/3 HH
    - 1.0/3 A18-49

A 1.0 is horrific, House got a 3.8 and it itself is very down on last year.

See this is what happens, this was never going to work on Fox, this would of done well on H.B.O, Showcase or Starz.
I wonder is there any hope of a cable network taking it over?

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 21,634 ✭✭✭✭Richard Dower

It smells like an FX or AMC show to me, dunno if it will be taken over...6 episodes were made, will they be broadcast?

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 21,634 ✭✭✭✭Richard Dower

Know what's even funnier?...LOADS of fans, pundits had Hellcats earmarked as the first show to be cancelled, and it's well on it's way to a full season!!....haha!!

Gutted at this. I really liked it.

It seems unlikely that a cable channel will save it, as it hasn't even got enough viewers to be considered a "cult following".
It's best shot would probably be Direct TV, they did a deal with NBC to keep Friday Night Lights on the air. But again, it's not very likely.

    http://www.tvguide.com/News/Lone-Star-Shelved-1023754.aspx
Fox has shelved Lone Star after just two episodes.
The network announced that Lie to Me -- which originally was scheduled to premiere in November — will take Lone Star's timeslot, beginning Monday.
Lone Star is not officially canceled, but likely will be after two weeks of abysmal ratings. Network officials did not immediately respond to requests for comment Tuesday about whether the series' remaining episodes will air.
The critically acclaimed drama, about a con man married to two women and leading two different lives, is the first freshman series of the 2010-2011 season to be removed from the air.
The show failed to connect with viewers despite a heavy promotional campaign from Fox. Lone Star premiered Sept. 20 to 4.1 million viewers and a 1.3 rating in the 18-to-49 demographic. The series' episode this week dipped to just 3.8 million viewers — despite an open letter to fans from series creator/executive producer Kyle Killen.
"For us to survive we're going to have to pull off a minor miracle. Statistically, new shows tend to lose viewers in their second week. We're aiming to gain them," Killen wrote on his personal blog Thursday.

    :(

^ from a commercial standpoint i understand the cancellation, from a creative standpoint it dosen't bode well at all for writers/creators taking chances, doing something other then "cookie cutter" shows.

    It's not a good sign :-(

I agree. If you look at all the other new non comedy shows this year, what is there? Cops, Spies, and Doctors. Is there any other new show on network tv that isn't something we've seen already?

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 21,634 ✭✭✭✭Richard Dower

^ sadly cops/doctors and spies is all the networks seem to think will sell, Glee was an obviously different show that (once) took chances....but now even that show is towing the party line. Cable is the only place that now takes chances.

Yeah Glee is "different" in that they sing and dance, but it's hardly quality story telling. I mean it's the same basic plot points, and you could dip in and out at any episode and not really have missed anything.
I don't understand though why people will watch a show if it's on cable, but won't watch it on a network?

Lone Star filmed a total of 6 episodes 2 of which aired, My Generation filmed 8 episodes two of which aired. The remaining My Generation episodes are expected to be online at ABC.com eventually, there is still some chance those Lone Star episodes could be burned off on Saturdays.
