UPC Phone Problem

Hope this is the right place to post this issue - if not please advise.

We've had UPC for phone, TV and broadband since September 2009 and had no issues until March of this year. The problem is with the phone only and is an intermittent one. What happens is that the phone rings once when there is an incoming call and then stops ringing. When you answer the phone the line appears dead. To the person making the call the phone appears to ring for about twenty rings and then they get a time out chime.

The problem may occur once or twice in a week. Sometimes it resolves itself and other times the modem (Scientific Atlanta) needs to be rebooted. Its a problem for us as it is a business line and customers sometimes cannot get through to us.

UPC have sent service engineers to us three times and replaced the modem already but to no avail. The seem to have no idea what is causing the problem.

Was hoping someone out there may have had a similar experience and found a resolution.

I had this problem two years ago. They got sick of coming out to me
in the end they monitored the line over a period of days and found the
problem was with an amplifier on another estate about half a mile from me. My
case was extraordinary as i'd have no internet and the phone would be perfect
and visa versa. They couldn't understand that one but it was happening.
