Seagate 1TB External Hard Drive €79.99 until the end of August in Easons

I know it's not as cheap as the Western Digital on amazon, but a pretty good price for a bricks & mortar shop

But it's free delivery online and a 3 day shipping time. Not really a bargain imo.

I presume you mean this one?

In which case it's worth nothing that has gone up in price since the thread was started and is coming in at €71 for me with free shipping so the difference between it and the Easons one is only €9 now.

Yeah - and the total price including free 4-5 (not 3) day delivery is €71 at the moment. So to dismiss the Easons one as not a bargain is a bit harsh in my opinion.

Excellent observation, but to quote myself if I may:
I know it's not as cheap as the Western Digital on amazon

Not everyone has a credit card and not everyone shops online. This is pretty cheap for an everyday shop.

It could easily fall in price by that much aswell. Just keep a check on the amazon site. Why bother to go to Easons when you can have it dropped to your door!

If you live in an apartment with a small letterbox ,easons is the better option.

    Cheers OP :)

Work? Have you seen the dole queue?
That's a pretty good bargain for a bricks and morter shop. The prices of these things just keeps goin down.
About 6 months ago the tech expert on The Last Word or The Right Hook stated that HDD was about 1 euro per gig.
He was well wrong at the time and he is even further wrong today.

I wonder if it would be cheaper in Reads of Nassau St at all...for all their studenty customers. If so I'd get myself one there.

Cheers for that, could do with a cheap, portable HDD. Any cheap 500GB in Easons though?

What are you basing that opinion on?
Theres no real studies out there to actually back up any claim on hard drive reliability, just opinions.
Personally though, I have seen almost equal issues with HDD's right across the range of makers.
The most recent issues were actually with Dell machines that had dodgy Western Digital drives in them. We had about 8 failures out of 40 in the first 3 months.
At various times I have seen the same with other makers over the years.

Even surveys across the web come up with different personal opinions:
    http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/245312-32-seagate-western-digital-reliability
I wouldnt exactly go for any one HDD over another over perceived reliability.

Me neither and have had good and bad experiences with most manufacturers' hard drives at different times over the years. Usually worth checking what sort of warranty cover is provided (often 3 years), that it applies in Ireland, what the process is for an RMA (Returned Merchandise Authorization) and - of course - do appropriate backups! ;)

    Agreed on all those points.

Hey folks just to tell you I picked up an Iomega branded external hard-drive for the same price (€79) in Easons - figured I had at least heard of the brand and had good experience with this in the past. As someone said above though, you can just get unlucky. By the way both the Seagate and the Iomega require a power supply in case you didn't know.
