Is it true that if you have to repeat an exam you only need to pass it? As in just get 40 percent?
    Thanks :)

It varies from situation to situation, if you are in a course that only the final year counts and you ar ein 3rd year tand if the entire years mark relies on only the exam and if there is no thresholding or anything then yes this may be true.

Up until a few years ago it used to be that if you had to repeat an exam the maximum you could get in that subject was 40% wether you got 100% or 40% in the repeat. This has changed however and is no longer in place so that it gives you the best possible chance. In most cases now the repeat exam result will be your result for that module unless it is a third repeat I believe or if there are other contributing marks such as continuos assesment.

After college some masters and jobs may ask for a full transcript of results for all years so you are best off to try your best to get the best results you can get no matter what the situation.
