Imported myself but not from the port. I wouldn't limit myself to the port garages.
Get a good sat nav :)

www.autoquake.com will get it to Dublin and VRT it for you or they will deliver it to you anywhere in the UK, all for a price ofcourse.

I imported from Big Motoring World and they drove it to the port for me, so I could just hop off the ferry, pick up the car and head home again.

With the exchange rate the way it is and the rise in second hand prices, there really isn't much value there at present. The only reason to import at the moment is for a spec or model you cannot get here.

thanks lads! yeah the savings are small alright but its more about finding the exact car im after cos there is a much larger pool to chose from

Don't agree. I saved 3.3K on an average car, which was like for like. As for the exchange, its still pretty good, granted not what it was but there are still good savings to be made.

From what I have seen of the market there is still some value across the pond but it solely depends on the model and version of a specific marque.

I wouldnt limit myself to just the port. Choose a few airports that you can easily get to from you nearest airport. Most dealers over in the UK will either pick you up at the airport or in my case pay for the taxi (£20) if your buying a car from them. Autoquake, and car giant were on the expensive side when I was looking 3 years ago. Would much perfer to do the leg work myself to track down the car I wanted.

A decent sat nav and away you go. Driving long distances in the UK is much easier than here due to some fore thought into road design and proper signage.

thanks guys, im starting my search soon! my reasons for sticking close to port are more lack of free time than worry about driving long distances in UK.. done that before

Yeah if i could buy the car for 10keuro i'd be delighted. I think its possibletoo.
Some very nice motors on autotrader.co.uk

I just use Westminister as postcode and select nationwide then SW1A 0AA

What do you know about the vrt calculator?
    https://www.ros.ie/VRTEnquiryServlet/showCarCalculator

Its giving me a price of 4keuro to bring in a car based on value of 25keuro. But as i've said above the car is only worth 10keuro-ish...

    Hmm...
