Maybe better to stick with VLC Media Player.

Chances of 'messing it up' are minimal once you download from a reputable source and follow installation instructions. However you shouldn't really be cluttering up someone elses computer with codec packs and installed apps etc, without their permission.

If you're so worried about messing up someone elses computer, why not just use VLC portable? It'll run off a USB drive (without needing to be installed on the computer itself) and should play most audio and video files.

Use ffshow. It's not a package of various codecs as such, but they are all integrated into one. Easy to install and easy to cleanly remove.
