Am looking at a used vw polo 2002 going for 1000. I got in contact with seller wondering why so cheap. No nct, no tax, motor on rear lock needs fixing, links on front suspension and engine needs attention. Does this sound mre trouble than its worth?

I always see this " engine needs attention" on too good to be true cars.
If it needs small attention why dont people bother to get it sorted themselves????
Suspension could potentially be very expensive also
    Stay well clear imo

If its sold as seen i'd be wary as there could be something pricy like a head gasket that needs doing. Best to get it checked out before parting with your cash.

everytime i see "engine needs attention" i'm thinking "no thx" and that's what i do

    good luck

Don't even consider it unless you are handy with a spanner yourself, from your post I reckon you're not :)

Although sometimes it can be worth getting it checked over by a mechanic...sometimes you can get a clueless seller that thinks it's fooked and it can be small problems...not very often mind...

I reckon if the seller could have got the all those things fixed at a resonable price they would have already done so and would be asking the going rate for a 2002 Polo.

to be blunt this car is basically scrap. the engine could be anything from a head gasket to complete rebuild. door locks are very expensive also and its anyones guess what else would be required to pass the NCT!

thanks guys! So do u reckon a good vw polo 2000 is worth 2200? Has nct til 2012 and mint condition

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,308 ✭✭✭Ricardo G

2200 sounds about right, NCT until 2012 is a big help
You could end up spending a lot more for the other piece of scrap!

I would not pay anywhere near €2200 for a 10 year old Polo. The seller needs a reality check, here is a 2002 for similar money:

In fact I wouldn't bother with that model Polo now, they are getting on in years now, small in the inside and their safety is poor by todays standards.

I would look at the Skoda Fabia which is based on the 2002 onwards Polo, much roomier, safer and more car for your money:

WHAT? Thats an old model Polo you showed in the first link !!
Bug eyed model from late 02 for 2200 is about right, in fact its cheaper than most advertised on Donedeal etc.
As for the Fabia, great car until you want to resell and be left with a nice dent in your pocket. At least his little Polo will still be worth a few quid

If you buy the Fabia cheaper to begin with then it only makes sense to sell it on cheap again. This is no different than paying over the odds for a Polo to begin with. Actually it never fails to amaze me how people overrate VWs and base their decision to buy one either on their over inflated value or reputation for reliability. Anyway the OP is looking at cars worth around €2500, is resale value really a major factor in the decision to buy?

If you do go for a Polo, make sure it has power steering. It's really not a pleasant experience without it.

The car is on autotrader, has 48000miles on it, blue colour, 1.0, 5dr. I cnt post a link as i.m on my phone but would appreciate someone tellin me what u think of it because i really love it! How can i get the price down?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 260 ✭✭LaLucy

the problem with the yaris is i've heard the bk seat is v small and I have a 2 month old and will room for her car seat. Otherwise i love the yaris. I'd like to spend under 2000 on a safe good looking car

Don't buy any car that 'needs attention ' and always get a reliable mechanic to check it over .

In all fairness, the Polo really is a dreadful car. Looks crap, drives crap, 1 litre engine is as noisy as a diesel and wouldn't pull the skin off a banana, and it's small and cramped with a tiny boot. Why don't you get something like this instead?
    http://www.carzone.ie/search/SEAT/Leon/1.4-SIGN/201028198852769/advert?channel=CARS

More space, much better looking inside and out, and nearly the same price with a bit of haggling.

OP you'd be insane to buy a car that needs attention. Really, really insane. Polos are not generally reliable, but to buy one that has problems already beggars belief. It'd be a massive waste of money and a will be huge source of frustration to you. I hope you enjoy paying your earnings directly to garage mechanics.

And by the way, if you buy the car with a known fault you will not have any comeback on it, dealer or not.

Id be very surprised if a 2002 Polo for €1000 didnt have some fairly serious issues that causing the seller to want to get rid ASAP. Id steer well clear if it was me.

My girlfriend bought a 01 1.4 Polo at the weekend for €1800, and its in bloody good nick. Id say for a 00 youd be wanting to try get the price lower than €2200.
