Ireland finish 17th in Europe on the placing table.

We finished 23rd in the World last year in Berlin

Considering the fact that the sport is seriously underfunded in this country, has very low participation rates, poor facilities, gets piss all media exposure and the fact we are a tiny country, competing in a truely global sport (not like Rugby which has about 10 decent teams around the world) I think we are doing fairly well and punching above our weight. Thoughts?

Interestingly we had five top 8 finishes which i feel we are progessing overall. While the level of World Class athletes seems to remain constant it is optimistic to see that fringe runners progessing and many NR falling this year.

tried to have a look to the Gotenburg placing table but cant seem to find it you wouldnt know where to find it to compare like with like and the progress over the last 4 years?

All that proves is that the difference between "failure" and "success" is very narrow. A bit more preparation/luck/resolution and Ireland could easily have come away with a gold and couple of other medals or if O'rourke had stumbled at the wrong moment Ireland might have won nothing. It wouldn't mean things were any better (or worse) than is the case.

The best measure is how many athletes set new PBs/NRs

I'm not sure tbh where to find it. The placing table is only a new phenominan. The first time I saw it used for the Worlds was in 2007, which is a shame as it is the best way of judging which countries are the best. The medal table is not a fair reflection, as one gold can beat 6 silvers etc.

AFAIK there were 4 NRs and 1 PB which I feel is a good return as that accounts for 11 athetes with the relays
