Israel -'immigration is a threat to its Jewish character'

Thats Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu words if ever one needed about the sectarian state Israel is. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-10832722

So what if they are illegal for 14 years. The fact that the Prime Minister and his fellow cabinet ministers want to deport them to 'preserving Israel's Jewish character' is proof if one is needed that Israel is a sectarian state.
    BBC wrote:
Mr Yishai caused an outcry last year when he accused migrant workers of bringing with them "a profusion of diseases... and drug addiction".
    In need of reform

According Mr Netanyahu, controlling immigration is largely about preserving Israel's Jewish character and his government intends to deport all illegal immigrants by 2013.

Immigration laws in Israel make it extremely hard for people to stay if they are not Jewish, but the scale of protest against these controversial proposals appears to have brought about a compromise of sorts.

Can you imagine if the Irish govt or the German govt or any govt came out with similar comments about 'preserving the Christian character of their states'? Yes, there would be uproar.

And this case proves that Arabs are not welcome in a Jewish state

Shimon Peres has also claimed that England is Anti-Jewish. He seems to forget WW2 rather quickly when it suits him and other zionists.

Haha, you sure about that? I remember reading about Jews having preserved their unique character in the likes of Turkey and Iran where they were not touched by the state.

You can just imagine an Arab living in Israel where the concept of democracy is that you have to part of the Jewish state, 2nd class citizens they are indeed.

I thought the Iranian leader wanted to wipe Israel off the map.
I can only imagine the concept of Democracy in the region if Hamas gained power.

Yeh sure he said that. He's against the concept of Israel but not against Jews themselves. There are still Jews in Iran(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Persian_Jews) as well as other Muslim countries, far from been persecuted.

Regarding Hamas, a group of extremist Jews did support them recently(thread was here a few months ago), yeh its all fecked up!

Agree, it is a sad and very ****ed up situation, almost impossible to see a solution.

Well, apparently there are 1.5 million Arabs in Israel (out of a total population in Israel of 7.5 million). A higher figure than I'd have guessed...

nothing new here..israel have always been a racist state.

but hey..it's israel so i guess we can't say anything is wrong here, wouldn't want to break any laws and be accused of antisemetism. ;)

Read 'Jews in 20th Century Ireland' by Prof.Dermot Keogh and 'The Emergency' by Brian Girvin for something similar a little closer to home.
While not agreeing with Netanyahu's rhetoric, the country he currently presides over is not the first to deport illegal immigrants.

Turkey is not an Islamic state by the way. It is a secular state. Never heard of Kamal Ataturk?
Iran isn't an Arab state either. Islamic yes but not Arabic.

And our govt want them in the EU!

Well, no surprise here. The Israeli government has always been clear that Israel is a Jewish state. The entire Jewish state concept has always been central to Israel, and shows that it is as much a democracy as Iran imho.

I wonder does he mean ethnically or religiously jewish. In that case it would be more akin to a German or Irish government said "preserving the white character of the state"

Still though. The cheek of some illegal immigrants is unbelievable:
Eustace's father, Vincent, is originally from Nigeria but came to Israel 14 years ago on a legal tourist visa.

Having outstayed his official welcome, he settled down here and a job, got married and had children.

"It's unfair and unjust," says Vincent of the deportation plan as he carefully watches his youngest daughter on the swings.

"These children are born here and speak the language. Israel should recognise their birthright."

Sorry mate. You're the one who stayed there illegally and brought this situation upon your daughter. No sympathy.

If this man has a legitimate claim to remain in Israel, then that blosters israel's illegitimate claim to Palestine - Neither the illegals nor the Europeans who settled in Palestine have any rights to be there.

My apologies, I meant to reply to this sooner, Traditionally, Islam has been far more tolerant of the Jewish people and their culture than the Christians have been. interestingly, when the Crusaders conquered Jerusalem, they slaughtered jews along with muslims. And the jewish people who had lived peacably alongside the Moors in Spain, were in the 100 years following the reconquest of Spain from the Moors either slaughtered or expelled. Need I mention the Holocaust ?
No wonder the jewish have chosen the middle east to locte their homes !

Thats utter bulls**t and typical rhetoric. Israel has had free and fair elections since its inception and no history of vote-rigging or corruption as in Iran.

Israel has had numerous changes of government and almost always has a coalition government. To liken the electoral system in Israel to Iran's is a very poor argument and could be seen as quite dishonest.

Really, let see Islamic Republic and Jewish state. The difference I see here is that one is Islamic and the other Jewish, but both ensure that one Religous group will always be dominant. Sorry, but they are actually very similar.

Israel is as much of a jewish state as Ireland is a christian state. The Rabbi's have very little power in Israel whereas in Iran the clerics ARE the power. You simply cannot equate Israel and Iran in that way.

I never said Israel was run by Clerics like Iran, just that there both committed to keeping one Religious group in power. Now to be fair in Israel, being Jewish is just as much a Ethnic identity, but that doesn't really change anything.

Really? Thats certainly interesting, considering that our government doesn't go around calling Ireland a white catholic state, like the Israeli government does in regards to being Jewish. Israel is not a proper Western style democracy. They Israeli government have made it clear time and again, that Israel is a Jewish state, those are there words, and not mine.

    Yes really.
In the Name of the Most Holy Trinity, from Whom is all authority and to Whom, as our final end, all actions both of men and States must be referred,
    We, the people of Éire,
Humbly acknowledging all our obligations to our Divine Lord, Jesus Christ, Who sustained our fathers through centuries of trial,
Gratefully remembering their heroic and unremitting struggle to regain the rightful independence of our Nation,
And seeking to promote the common good, with due observance of Prudence, Justice and Charity, so that the dignity and freedom of the individual may be assured, true social order attained, the unity of our country restored, and concord established with other nations,
Do hereby adopt, enact, and give to ourselves this Constitution.

Rather a different thing to all the major parties pledging to keep the 'Jewish majority'........

Israel is as much of a jewish state as Ireland is a christian state.

Right so are we about to start restricting immigration from non-Catholic countries to preserve the "Catholic character" of the state?

And you're the one going on about lazy comparisons?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 156 ✭✭sirromo

Fair play to the Israelis. Israel is the world's only jewish country and its people are right to insist that it should remain Jewish.

    Yes really.

Great, so show where Ireland has miscegenation squads like Israel, where on the basis of Religion you can get instant citizenship, and where our every major party bangs on about maintaining a Catholic majority as a matter of government policy.

I think you will find nothing comparable in Ireland.

Can you imagine a situation where Muslims are prohibited from building new minarets, or where their women are denied the basic right to choose what clothes they want to wear. Damn bigoted Israelis. Oh wait...

All would be good if only we had the pure Proto-Aryan race.

There would be no Jews or Muslims, just Germans with a good sense of humour.

As said by Nodin above, I haven't shifted anything. In fact, I already mentioned one of those reasons earlier.....

Ultimately, your post says it all, as there really is nothing comparable here to the things I mentioned.

Whilst I have major issues with Israels foreign policy over the years, this is one decision which I endorse. Illegal immigration is the elephant in the room for the majority of European countries and it pleases me to see it being dealt with by Israel in such a fashion.

If the kids were born in Israel then I think they should stay if not then they must leave with thier parents after thier 5 year work visa is up.
The law is there in black and white theres no grey area in this just some people having a go.
Sure If I was in there position of course Id give it a shot the kids will have a much better life in Israel a better education etc.. but unfortunatly if the law says there not citizens then there not citizens the same in Most countries at least they had the right to appeal it and have there voices heard by the media and a suppport group to help.
Better chance than others had of trying to stay in Israel.
