Cast the book adaptation

Alright lads and ladies, hopefully this will be a bit of fun. I always wanted to see a real faithful adaptation of Bram Stoker's Dracula so here would be my dream cast. It's cool to be critical but you know, don't be a dick about it. ;) Try and give reasons too peeps. I'd want an ensemble cast so don't be moaning at me about lesser known actors who would be better for the roles. :pac:

    Dracula

    1. Dracula - Jackie Earle Haley - Dracula isn't suave. Dracula is not a tragic villain. He's a cold hearted, mean and devious looking bastard. He is supposed to look like this. So I'm sure you can see why I'd be a fan of JEH for the role. Furthermore, it's not just about looks, anyone who has seen JEH in action and who has read the book will know that he's a great fit for Dracula. As I said, he's a devious and sinister bastard, and that suits JEH right down to the ground.

    2. Jonathon Harker - Michael Sheen - Granted, Harker is only a very young lad and Sheen is 41, but I think I could look past the age dfference for Sheen. I think he could perfectly capture the initial naivety of Harker, the unhinged Harker and finally the hardened Harker.

    3. Van Helsing - John Hurt - I think he could capture the sheer bravery and at times madness of Van Helsing. That's all I can say really.

    4. Mina Murray - Amy Adams - After seeing her in Doubt, I think she would be brilliant as the timid yet tough Mina. I really think she could capture the dignity and bravery of Mina perfectly.

    5. Lucy Westenra - Gemma Arterton -
I don't think she's as bad as people like to suggest. I think Gemma could do well as the spoilt yet innocent Lucy.

    6. John Seward - Tom Hardy -
Amazing actor. Brilliant in Bronson, and very charismatic in both Inception and RocknRolla. I think he'd be great as the dignified and silently suffering Seward.

    7. Arthur Holmwood - Michael Fassbender -
He has this great presence in Inglourious Basterds where he plays a privileged and posh army lieutenant. Holmwood has to have this sense of royalty as well as having a brave and honourable character. I think Fassbender would be great in this role. He is a fine actor with brilliants turns in Fish Tank and Hunger.

    8. Quincey Morris - Josh Holloway -
Big, tough as nails Texan. Holloway is perfect for the role. Furthermore, Hardy, Fassbender and Holloway have all proven that they have great group chemistry on screen in their respective roles. I think these guys would capture the camaraderie of Seward, Holmwood and Morris perfectly.

    9. Renfield - Sharlto Copley - Minor yet important role, Copley would be excellent as the insane Renfield. He would capture his little demented mannerisms perfectly.

So there you have it, my dream cast for Bram Stoker's Dracula. Be gentle. :pac: And don't be afraid to give your own dream casts for other book to film adaptations or even Dracula as well. :)

I'm a fan of classic science fiction, and Hollywood has a very poor record when it comes to making films from those books. For example, I, Robot (starring Will Smith) is a very long way from the original short story by Isaac Asimov. There are better Asimov works, such as The Caves of Steel, and I can imagine Robert de Niro as Elijah Baley and Cillian Murphy as R. Daneel Olivaw. Or - dare I say it - replace De Niro with Di Caprio? :P

(I'd also like to see good movies of some Arthur C Clarke's books - but they tend to be less character focused, and might be better with ensemble casts.)

Here's a weird one: years ago I read a Zane Grey Western called The Light of Western Stars, and thought it would make a great movie. It's unusual for a Western in that it features a strong female character, and is set in the very late Western period - so late that it has a long car trip. Turns out that it has been made in to a movie four times before: 1918, 1925, 1930 and 1940, all of which deviate significantly from the book, as far as I can tell. Could do with a reboot, as a starring vehicle for someone like Kristen Stewart or Julia Stiles, for example.

You are the type of what the age is searching for, and what it is afraid it has found. I am so glad that you have never done anything, never carved a statue, or painted a picture, or produced anything outside of yourself! Life has been your art. You have set yourself to music. Your days are your sonnets.

I think the one problem with this thread is that a lot of people won't actually know the characters from the books. I've always wanted a good Dracula adaptation but I suppose, considering the story is told in diary entries and newspaper articles, that it's a tough one to do.

I kind of liked the cast they had for the Bram Stoker's Dracula years ago. Some of the cast were terrible, but others were great. Anthony Hopkin's played a brilliantly insane and almost uncaring Van Helsing, and Richard E. Grant pllayed a good role too. And Tom Waits was horribly excellent as Renfield.

With your cast, I'd have gone with someone like Josh Brolin as Quincy, as I picture the character being older man, but I guess that could be just me. Also, I'd go for MArk Strong as Dracula (although I'd feel bad about casting him in yet another baddie role). Strong is a good looking but eery guy who would been the daper count that Mina meets, but with a bit of make-up could be the tall, lithe ghoul that Harker meets.

Great idea for a thread, hopefully some of you have read this.If you haven't,do.

    Neil Gaiman's American Gods

**** loads of characters so will only do some.

Mr Wednesday-George Clooney- bearded with a glass eye. Charismatic, charming and a bit of a con-man.

Shadow - Tom Hardy - Bg tough and introvert, the main hero of the story.

Mr Nancy - Samuel L Jackson(or maybe Morgan Freeman) - african god of mischief who appears as an aged african man

Czernobog - Peter Stormare - Slavic demonic deity, appears as an aged man.

Laura - Rachel Weiss - Shadows wife.

Low Key - Michael Fassbender - Shadow's ex cell mate.

There's a hell of a lot more characters but thats more or less the core i guess. :)

Agreed on all counts, I thought the 92 film had a great cast in some regards, I just didn't like the direction of the story.

Strong and Brolin are great choices.

Tom Waits was brilliant as Renfield, and Gary Oldman was brilliant in spite of being a very different Dracula from the book.

Cuba Gooding Jr. would have made a great Joe Louis I'd say.
