Silencers aren't really effective in airsoft because most sound comes from the gearbox, silencers like the Gemtech Halo take some of the snap out of the shot which is the most you can expect but you'll still hear the gearbox turning over.

If you want quiet Andrewrob you're best to move away from anything with a gearbox, as the lads mentioned above. Spring powered rifle/shotgun will be the most silent - never fired a gas sniper rifle so not sure about them - but given that a gas rifle (GBBR) will usually be louder than an aeg I can't imagine them being all that silent, though maybe the bolt action gas rifles without the noise of a cycling bolt might be better. Not strictly silencer advice, I know - more silence advice...

Gas bolt action rifles are generally louder than their spring counterparts. I know my gas L96, for example, is about twice as loud as it's spring variant, for no extra usefulness in return.

As for what the quietest suppressors are, Madbull. Simple answer, and the only one. Their Gemtech line was made in conjunction with Gemtech themselves, who make real-steel suppressors, and their HALO model has been recorded as being the quietest of all in airsoft.

As said, the operation of them is not to silence, but to suppress, removing the high end "snap" caused by the sound of the piston hitting home. Most of the noise still comes from the gearbox and is still audible from the body. The advantage is that the high end noise, which you muffle with the Gemtech suppressors, is the most noticeable at range. Close by, at around 10-15 yards, you'll still notice it. But beyond that, if you had one on your rifle and were firing from an concealed position, your opponent is going to find it considerably harder to pinpoint where the sound is coming from. They'll still hear the lower, bassier notes of your gearbox in operation (and this can be somewhat taken care of by having your gearbox cycle as fast as possible while shooting on semi).

Think of it like vehicles in the distance. If you hear the low rumble of a diesel engine, you'll be hard pressed to place it before it comes within eyeshot of you. If you hear an ambulance with it's sirens blaring, however, you'll pick out the position it's approaching from a long time before you see it, because the high pitch siren is easier to locate.

Same thing applies with the "snap" noise on a piston. Easier to locate than the gearbox rumble. Bullpup rifles tend to produce less sound, and work better with suppressors, than any other AEG type. The audible difference between a P90, for example, with a suppresor and without one, is pretty huge.
