when shooting foxat long range with a shotgun what size of shells should you use ? as i find even shooting rabbits with the lll choke at a fair distance it takes 2 shots anyway and that is useing 6 32gr shells so what set up do i need for fox would it be 3.5inch 63gr bbs or what ? advice for fox stays out of range and i dont wana take a shot to fighten it away or make him lamp shy

A rifle is the tool for that job, unless you can get close.
3.5" supermagnum just brings more lead to the party not more velocity or range, unlike rifle magnums.

Please give ranges for situations in bold above please

There is no long range for shot guns, if the fox is too far away don't shoot it.
30-40 yards is far enough using either BB's or 36 gram No.4s.

What are you using to call the fox in?

I shot my first fox with shotgun. 00 semi magnums at about 35-40 yards.
Wouldnt do it now though, as i have the rifle. If problem fox about and ground not suitable i would chance the shotgun but no further than that. Not sure of the effective range of the 00 semi magnums but i dont want to find out by only wounding a fox

Whatever you decide to use make sure your gun is proofed for such loads....not all guns are capable of firing 63g loads, nor are they chambered to take 3.5'' shells.

I use Eley BB Alphamax no 3 will kill outright to 40 yards ...beyond forty yards I just let Mr. Fox go.

I used to use Winchester 0's for fox shooting, fantastic fox cartridge!
Not sure if they can be got any more!
Mini-magnums are also good for the job!

The brother in law uses a 35 and a half inch single barrell with 3 inch cartridges for lamping foxes! Was amased at the distance he was dropping foxes with it!
I couldn't hit a barn door with the bloody thing!

I think in this day and age the rifle is the only way to go, when it comes to lamping foxes, lamping with the shotgun is nearly a thing of the past!

Wash your mouth out with soap!

I know plenty of locations a rifle wouldn't have a hope of knocking a fox, but a shotgun definitely would.

Fair enough, but you have to agree that most lads these days that are into lamping foxes are using rifles more so than shotguns!

When i was a young lad, (long time ago) there was very few lads in the area with high powered rifles, now it seems that everyone thats into lamping has one! (except me!) :D

High powered rifles is a Garda/DOJ term ;) If you go onto sites like 6mmbr .22 cals are listed under "Small stuff" :D

You're right, more rifles are out lamping. The really effective team bring both rifle and shotgun, sitting pretty at 100 yards isn't much good for a shotgun. But, running ten yards behind ya with a few seconds to react before he disappears isn't much use for a rifle either :)

Shotgun lamping is way more challenging than rifle lamping, and IMO way more enjoyable too.

Myself and one of my mates do similar,
I shoot a few head shot bunnies for the pot.
Then he goes for bolting ones as we comb the ditches!

I sometimes find a high mag scope a hinderence for -50 yards as the field of view is limited.

We only do this for Charles. For bunnies we both use .22lr

Well where are bunnies are so too is Charlie.
So really when I go Bunny Shooting, I am going Fox shooting too ;)

Foxes are very cagey around me.
And most of the scrup land has been buldozes so Shotty is very limited.

    Great for a rifle though

    ha ha.

I suppose it's years of tormenting them!
I'm not very close to a town where I hunt so the foxes steer clear of people.

the reason i dont use the rifle is the ground is unsuitable for it and yes as to an earlier reponse its way more challenging to dotis and my gun is proofed to take64grm loads with 3.5inch shells

I use 36 gram BB's for fox. Scully in Athlone used to do an absolutely deadly BB cart but alas no longer! I've shot them farther than 40 yards but I don't advise it, keep the range to 40 yards, side on to you and you'll drop what you shoot.
