A good foundation?

Right ladies, looking for a GOOD foundation - i.e. one that looks natural and stays on well for a long period of time. I've heard of MAC, Bobbi Brown etc but which gives the best coverage and the best durability?

Currently I use Maxfactor Lasting Performance, and have to say, there's nothing 'lasting' about it's performance at all, as it's run off me by the end of a night, especially a night on the tiles with all the dancing and sweatiness!

I've considered a primer also, to help it stay on longer but unsure of which one to go for and would rather not jump in the deep end and buy 'any old thing' for the sake of it.

i don't particularly want to 'splash out' on make up as a bit strapped for cash at the moment, but i supose I could make allowances if it was exactly what I needed!

I'm not sure what skin type I have, I often get flaky bits around my nose yet other times it can be oily, so I am pretty clueless.
I've got quite fair skin but would like a darker make up for using on a night out if I've got tan applied.

    Help, please :)

Oh and don't advise me to 'go and get my make up done and let them help me' as I've never gotten my make up done properly and the thought of sitting in public surrounded by gawpers doesn't appeal to me at all. I'd much prefer to mosey around the make ups myself and choose one!

I use Gosh Velvet Touch Foundation Primer and think it's fab.

I think its about €18 though for the facial foundation, so not exactly cheap, sorry. I also use the Gosh Velvet Touch Eye Primer and find it good. But, tbph, eye facial primer does just as good job as the eye primer, the only real difference is the price. I also have the Gosh Eyeshadow Base and found it good tbh.

It might be cheaper if you buy online

Thanks for this PB, to be honest, €18 isn't that expensive, considering Smash Box one is €30+? I think. I'm not that au fait with make up lark! But thanks. Still open to suggestions :) Everyone having a lazy Sunday me thinks :P

Estee Lauder Double Wear really lasts, they have a light version too. It's pricey though at around €35.

This seems to be the best around for lasting power.

I use Shiseido "The makeup" - I actually got it from my Mam who bought it and the colour was too light for her.

It goes on creamy and lasts for ages. I used to wear it for Irish dancing shows so it really lasts!!

    Highly reccommended!

I've only started using primer relatively recently and opted to go with Smashbox. Initially I wasn't all that impressed with it, but having used it quite a bit I find it's worked quite well with the foundation I'm using at the moment - Loreal Perfect Match foundation. The makeup actually does stay on longer, especially when I've been out at the races or on a night out.

Was thinking of trying the Gosh one when I have to replace my current one.

I assume your choice of foundation will depend on what you'll be doing - whether you'll be indoors or outdoors, walking around more instead of just sitting down, etc. I've found that Loreal is fine for indoors, but you'd definitely need primer with it if wearing it outdoors.

I use Estee Lauder, Double wear and love it - gives great coverage, nice colours and €34, good price for the length you get out of it.

Its great for spreading so you don't need alot.

Try and go around and get samples as its hard to know what works with your skin, are you in Dublin? Laura Mercier are very good at giving samples - so are mac. Ive gotten a few from mac and they havent been great on my skin but other people swear by them:rolleyes:

    Good idea about getting samples.

I use Revlon Colour Stay Foundation, I've used it for years and it works brilliantly for me and its only €17 per bottle so it doesn't break the bank. People always ask me what foundation do I use.

I don't really use primer, tried it once but didn't see a huge difference so I didn't bother anymore.

I would recommend dusting powder/bronzer over your face after you have put on your foundation, the powder will give that extra protection/layer. You won't be caked in make up either if you used a light enough foundation, I find the Revlon one very easy to smooth on, a thin layer is enough during the day to even out your complexion and you can put it on a little heavier on a night out then if that's what you fancy!

Also I got a present from a friend recently, it's from Clarians and it's a face spray, you basically spray it on your face after you finish putting on your make up and it 'seals' it. Now I've only used it once so I can't give a complete recommendation on it. It doesn't leave a shine on your face or anything though, from my experience anyway but it might be worth a try for you....

Hunting down a good foundation is a head-wreck but once you find a good one you'll be glad you did. It's so much easier to go into a shop and just pick up the foundation you want, pay and out the door!:D

I love bobbi brown stick foundation or MAC studio fix.

Tried estee lauder double wear. Did not like at all, found it very hard to blend. But know loads of people who love it.

I think you need to get loads of samples before you purchase & make sure you bring your own sample pots in case they dont have any.
