Picked up one of these v cheap and generally delighted especially with mpg...however theres a small diesel leak which can only be seen as a drip or two around the sump .Id imagine its losing it at the rate of maybe an egg cup a month !However I cant help but be worried ...is this likely to be the pump of injectors and get much worse fast or would anybody have a suggestion?NCT failure? Thanks.

It's not clutch fluid is it?

Loads of diesel cars suffer from little leaks as hoses and the like perish with age, could be the little braided off the cylinders, common on loads of cars, dunno about Renaults though. Doubt the NCT dudes would fail it even if they noticed it, diesel won't ignite like petrol so it's not really a danger.

I think its diesel and most of the visible pipes are hard clear plastic that dont look as if theyd perish .

These cars have a small fuel lift pump which is just above the steering rack on the drivers side. You could have a leak from around here, or possibly from the fuel filter. Is the leak collecting around one side of the sump or other components?

NCT will fail those leaks if they cop it! I've replaced those braided leak-off pipes on quite a few cars for exactly this reason. When these leak, they betray themselves by the unmistakable whiff of diesel they give off. All the tester has to do it touch the braid with a finger of his glove and he'll see and smell the diesel straight away.

Hard to spot though as most cars have covers over the engine which the testers do not remove, nor is the owner required to remove the cover for testing, on such cars the finger of the tester won't be going anywhere near the leak off pipes.

On cars without the cover you are no doubt right.

Could be leakback hoses from the injectors....
maybe clean the diesel from the area...run it and see if you can pin point the source of the leak.

    did u check fluids levels???

so u should know where its gettin lower than it was so u should know what sort of leak is it

about NCT - if leak is not major, u will pass.

my oilsump was bit wet and they didnt say word about it.

I reckon its definitely diesel...Had a closer look last night and the HIGHEST wet point is around the cam/valve cover gasket ...now excuse my (diesel) ignorance but surely OIL would be all that would leak out of there ?So has the diesel splashed up there from somewhere ?As far as I can tell its dripping down onto a glowplug and then down the block and sump ....Might try adding some gasket sealant around the wet spots on cam cover but I reckon maybe a diesel 'specialist' is the best answer .BUT can anyone recommend one who isnt as hard to see/dear as a cardiac specialist!?Dublin West/Kildare area preferably? Thanks
