BMW 320ci burning oil?

I have a BMW 320ci (2001 reg) which seems to be burning through oil lately. Any ideas why? It has about 83k on the clock and has been serviced regularly (inspection 2 not too long ago). I noticed over the last year or I was seeing the yellow oil light come on almost once every 1000 miles or so. According to BMW this is normal.

But over the last few months I've been seeing it a lot more. I had to top up by a litre 400 miles ago. Before that it was less than 1000 miles aswell. Now it has come on again (400 miles since last top up). There doesn't seem to be any oil leaking.

    Ideas?

Maybe try a different grade of oil, what are you using in it now?

They do burn oil but that sounds excessive. Things specific to that engine are a worn crank case vent valve (CCV) and leaky valve stem seals. The CCV is easy enough to test for, have a Google. It could be other stuff.

The M54 engine in the 320Ci (and in 2.2, 2.5 and 3.0 form in 3 and 5 series BMW's from late 2000) have a little bit of a reputation for doing this. There doesn't seem to be a great deal to be concerned about if its within BMW acceptable limits and as long as you and previous owners have kept a regular check on it and not let it run too low too often.

The 330Ci I had for a couple of years used a bit. A change to a good quality 10w40 oil semi or full synthetic (instead of the recommended 0w40) reduced it to negligable levels. As well as that, I increased the frequency of changes so that there was an interim change at about half way between the Service Interval Indicator gaps (so a change at about 7.5k against a 15.5k-ish interval on the SI).
