When you call someone else with an iPhone 4 the facetime button pops up as an option on screen, then you get the option in contacts menu to just go straight to facetime without the need to make a call first.

Restore. You can do a backup so you shouldn't lose anything.

doesn't facetime require a cell signal to initiate the initial call? you have no service in the screenshot.

I have found that no matter who I call, I always get a message saying 'X is unavailable for FaceTime'. And I damn well know that they aren't, because they are deff in a Wifi area and have an iPhone 4.

    That's sort of annoying.

two ways to make facetime calls, options are not in settings:

1, call someone, after connection you will see there's a facetime option on screen

2, go to contacts and find your contact, there's a facetime call option there

Imo i think the second option is quicker, oh all this is assuming that the other person has iphone 4!!!!

from his screen shot it would seem he doesn't have that option in there

I'm being charged 21c for text messages to the uk every time I try to make a facetime call?
Anyone else seeing this on their account ?

Ah, I upgraded to 4.0.1 after I couldn't get facttime working first time, maybe the restore/upgrade of the SW activated it in the settings and i jsut presumed it was there before but I hadn't come across it.

    Upgrade or restore so.

Did a restore as new phone and it worked no problem.... But when restoring from backup of my 3GS I just don't wanna work.. Was on to apple for over an hour earlier and they too are baffled.. Have sent logs and backups over to them to see if they can sort it.
So had to set up as new phone and now must refer to old 3GS to check old texts etc. Mare
Now I've got another problem. No data coverage at all... Have to ring data support in the morning... Aaargh

i wonder if it sends out the text message if it can't open a port through your wifi connection satisfactorily enough to guarantee that the facetime call will initiate...

What is your, and your friend's wifi setup? Is UPnP on on your routers?

Yes, me too. I'm just off the phone with 3 customer support and they confirmed that the charges are a UK text number.

Be wary if you are continuously trying to get face time working. Maybe leave it for a day or two until the networks catch up with all the new customers.

Can anyone confirm that the other networks are charging for facetime texts? 3 are.

I might phone Apple about it and see what is up. After all, FaceTime was meant to be a free feature, other then the charges racked up before the other person accepts your facetime invite when you are phoning them normally.

Hopefully they will get this sorted out.

Has anybody managed to make a facetime call yet?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 647 ✭✭✭slasher_65

Yup. It stalled after a while though.

To be honest, it's basicaly a slightly higher resolution version of what us in Europe were doing in 2006 with Video Calling. Not hugely impressive for those of us who have seen it before, SPECIALLY since it's only over wifi.

Ya, I phoned my fiancé a few times. Kind of hit and miss but really cool feature when it's working!

Worked the first time I tried- it is pretty cool.

Not impressed with all these 21c text message charges though- 6 of them are showing up, apparently sent an hour or so after turning on my phone for the first time- I hadn't even tried Facetime at that point so I have no idea what the texts are for! €1.27 in charges- what the hell is that about? o2 never once warned about being charged for this.

So O2 are charging this as well as 3? That must mean the charge comes from Apple. So much for it being a free service. I wouldn't mind the text setup charge if it was a local text.

Is it a case that the text is sent everytime you initiate a facetime call or is it supposed to just be a once off charge so as to register your details on the apple facetime server???
That's the jist I got from reading up on it online
