Anyone tried it yet? It's cool, I can see myself using this a fair bit to be able to see the kids when I'm away, if the reaction of my 5 year old is anything to go by, it one of the greatest additions to mobile telephony in donkeys years*

*Before anyone says its been available on other phones for ages, that may be true but it didn't work is any meaningful way. On my previous 3 SE and Nokia's it was as useful as a waterproof teabag.

Meh... Webcams are just as good and just as easy to use, and alot more people have webcams than laptops.

I just dont see the appeal of it!!!

i have a bit of a love hate relationship with facetime.

video calling is nothing new everyone knows that but doesn't help when apple are pushing "this will change everything again..." mumbo jumbo.

I made my first facetime call yesterday in 4 weeks of having the phone, three guys in the office got the phone yesterday and we tested it out.

To me facetime is useless at the moment.

    1. need to be on wifi - sure it gives better quality of image etc and more fluid picture but it takes the mobile out of the term "mobile phone", now i know they are working on 3g so will revaluate when that comes along.

    2. i rarely make phone calls, i'd say on a good day if i have my phone to my ear for 30 minutes it would be an extremely busy day. I text, IM, skype instead. so the urge to actually call someone then ensure they in wifi area with iphone 4 and then initiate facetime call is just not appealing to me.

on the other hand i can see this being good for certain people.

deaf people for instance now have a high quality phone with good cameras/screen to be able to video call people and not have it cost them an absolute fortune. before deaf people had to make do with tiny tiny screens with low resolution and be charged through the mouth to make video calls. but wasn't one of my arguments against it not having it on 3g yet? sure was, but it's about having the choice.

my parents would love it, as it would mean they could see my brother that's in boston pretty much any time they called and are amazed at this "new" technology, i should really show them skype.

also another group of people it will benefit is people who have phone sex :pac:.

i also don't like the name of it, facetime. it just sounds oh, i don't know lame.

It's an open standard, so anyone can implement it. I'd expect Skype and iChat to have it soon.

Having used Skype on my N900 to make a total of 2 video calls, I would be very interested to see the quality of Facetime.

On the N900, video calling is like being back in the 1990's in terms of quality - a mash of pixellated Jerk-o-vision, and on a tiny screen.
