Retina Display, Really that good?

I dont have an iphone 4, i have never used one either but im just looking for opinions from you new iphone owners. What do ye think of the Retina Display. Is it all its cracked up to be?
From various reviews on youtube it gets great descriptions but the majority of these are hardcorse apple fanboys (Which the majority of you are too:rolleyes:) but maybe if we get a full blown discussion on here it will be easy to pick out any flaws people may notice.

So what do ye think of the Retina Display?

Let's put it this way.

The Retina Display should not exist. Sure, I know it's just a really high quality display, but it's just creepy how... clear it is. You need to see it in person. It's mad.

The Retina display needs to be seen to be believed.

It really is the best display out there atm. better than Samsung's Super AMOLED even.:cool:

As close to perfection as you can get from any sort of display. I have it beside my old 3GS and the 3GS seems pixely. I'm even cringing looking at my laptop beside the iPhone 4.

It's something no amount of YouTube videos or website reviews can put into context how astonishing it actually is. Only when you hold one in your hands can you fully appreciate and understand the sheer ridiculousness of the screen quality in your hands.

Take how good your life is now, double it, then add 5000. You still won't be close to how much better your life's going to be with a retina display in it.

My missis thought I was wasting my cash with a new phone that did more or less the same as the last one.

Last night I showed her a few pics from the camera and a video - and she said "I want one. Now."

Is there anywhere i can actually look at it. Seeing as all the shops are sold out and none of my friends have one i have no way of actually viewing the screen. Which is very annoying.

If a boardsie wants to send me their new iphone for a day i can pay postage

I've had to turn the brightness right up on my iPad because of the new phone display is so good it really has to be seen.

When they put that display into the iPad it's going to be some device.

some apps on the iPhone 4 haven't had their icons updated yet i.e. dublin buster, daft.ie but the actual apps themselves look gorgeous due to the OS taking care of the text and UI controls.

Really couldnt be arsed making a new thread (think there are enough iphone4 ones already) but:

If im at home and i have full 3g signal and full wifi signal and go browsing the web or using any internet based app. Will the data download automatically from wifi?

The screen looks so much bigger it's weird how clear it is I've shown it to people with no interest in tech Nd resoulution and they were stunned..

Surprised no one has mentioned that the signal on the 3G screen shot is better than the signal on the 4 screenshot haha, "Are you holding it right?" ha

both screen shots were taken in different areas at different times, hell even in different years i think... 2009 for 3G S and 2010 for iPhone 4.

yup, whenever your in a wifi zone, it'll switch to wifi automatically,

So I got the iphone 4 and the screen looks great but I wanna watch some hd videos on you tube or convert some of my own videos to show it off but I cant seem to find any, I was shown a demo in the store and it looked incredible!
Ive searched for the word "hd" and "360p" on you tube but they come up crap! any suggestions?

The quality of the screen is unbelievable! You really do need to see to see how good it is! You can't see pixels! All other screens look terrible after it :-)

I have to say I was one of the non-believers of this, thinking 'Oh well the human eye can only see things to a certain point, there's no way the naked human eye could see things any clearer if...blah blah'

Boy is my face red right now.

Turned it on, and had a '....well holy crap' moment when I saw the screen.
To make things even worse, I went and turned on my old old iphone, looked at the screen on that and yikes, the difference. You do actually need to see one for real to really appreciate the difference.

Yes! Held 3G upto 4 there in a shop here in Edinburgh and it's amazing. The photos and video are amazing too. Used an iPad after and it just felt like the big iPod touch, screen quality-wise.

I am most definitely not a fanboy (of anything).
The iPhone is the only Apple device I own and intend on owning.
Anyhoo, the display really is amazing. Looks fantastic. The viewing angles are extremely (extremely) impressive too.
Although I was always happy out with the display on my 3GS, once you see the 4's the 3GS screen will never look the same to you again (it's still decent though).
It has me wondering if they even need to bother trying to fix anymore pixels on future versions of the iPhone.
One thing though, the gimmicky name "Retina Display" is well, ahh, hmm? Gimmiky!

Any techies know how the display would differ from the 4 to the HTC Desire? I heard a, probably throw away line, that "a lot of Android phones have improved displays as well". Seeing as how my eyesight is pretty bad in the first place, I'm looking for any help I can get!

I had the Desire too (up until last week) and the screen was quite impressive. Looked better than my 3GS (don't ask why I had two). I'm not really a techie person all I know is that it has an AMOLED screen. Which however good it looks is extremely difficult to see in sunlight and what not.
Also I read somewhere a few days ago that newer manufactured Desires will actually have better screens, as they can't seem to get enough of the type of screen that they're currently using in the phone.

For youtube you have to chose 720p under the video if it's available. There will be a HD tag on the video after the title if HD is available as an option on it.

To be honest - I have a HTC Desire and today I had a play around with an iphone4 in a shop. IMO the Desire screen is equally as good as the iphone4 screen. Really I could see no obvious difference. Whats more I much prefer the HTC interface.

I regret looking at the iPhone 4 screen. My friend has one so I had a good few minutes with it (not the same as a demo in the store where you can be self-conscious about really getting up close and scrutinizing it I find).

Anyway, I can't get one because i can't justify the expense but... words fail. I've been trying not to think of it to be honest because suddenly all my screens look ****. My 1080p 50 inch, my iPad, my lovely high res monitor in work (don't talk to me about my psp - that thing has been suffering since I got my first iPhone a few years ago).

It looks kind of cartoony. Look at the curves on the new icons, or take a look at font sizes you never thought possible and read them (I loaded up the new York times on my iPhone and the iPhone 4 and every font was readable even though the actual size of the fonts had to be like a millimeter or something).

Couldn't see the pixels at all. To be fair, I didn't try to see the pixels (I'm sure if I put it right up to my eye I might see something) but the difference between this and current iPhones (which already had beautiful screens) is crazy.

All the o2 stores seem to have demo ones to plat with. Would like to see facetime in action though. Anyone do this yet?

it does have a high resolution screen as well but the desire is 480x800 where as the iphone 4 has 640x960x wow

both are impressive but the iphone 4 wins it, that being said they both have a higher resolution screen than my first pc which was 640x480 :eek:

i'm sure he meant he wants to watch them on the iphone, the youtube app is brutal for iphone and ya dont get a choice to what resolution it plays in

At the end of the day its a 3.x" phone screen, both the HTC Desire and iPhones are far more than good enough, retina is pointless overkill, it is nice tho mind, but completely needless.

I figured out the you tube thing! you have to be on wifi to get the hd videos if ur not they;; just come through regular!

Why because your upset you didnt get a Desire?

TBH lads all these phones whether it be a HTC Desire or iPhone are completely needless. But we love having them anyways cos were all loaded with moniez.

its the highest quality glossy magazine page print you've ever seen, your eyes are literally incapable of seeing the pixels on this device the resolution is so high

whether you want it or not, is up to you
