No doubt .Not somthing to be mucked around with a polar bear. They are top of the food chain up there and are absolutly fearless of man.Wonder did he shoot at it in the PC way as described by Steve Hammond. one over it ,one under itinto the ice,one left ,one right and the last one into it?:rolleyes:Or the more sensible way in a sit like that? All five straight into dead centre body mass???

Well in the Artic i believe the polar bear are top of the food chain,we come 2!!!!icon11.gif
And bring a high caliber rifle .300 win mag or higher if possible,or pistol revolver higher then .45.icon11.gif
I think they used 5 or 6 rounds of 308 to bring it down.his buddy emptied the magazine before the bear went down, they had a pump action shotgun with them too,but the bear actually broke it!!!! in the struggleicon9.gif when he was pulled out of the tent.
Just shows the power you are up againsticon8.gif
    Polarbears are magnificent animals,but at a distanceicon7.gif

With a .357 mag, you are only good for ploar bear food !!! ;)

Whenever I am in bear country, it is Rem 870 with 600 grain Brenneke slugs, with a S&W 500 in the sleeping bag!

I totally agree, but what Grizzly was pointing out was the minimum calibers that are recommended when in polarbear country.
I wouldnt have gone for anything less then .300 winmag or .44 magnum, but thats meicon7.gif
And a good old remington 870 with slugs will certainly do the job close range.icon10.gifand the S&W 500 as well.icon12.gif

Polar bears are an amazing animal.
However as the Icecaps are shrinking, the Polar bears are venturing closer and closer to civilization; which makes conflict with Humans a sad reality.

having fired a .44 mag, i would deffo think it must almost be compulsory to carry one, and a 12g Slug gun

The only time I saw a polar bear in the flesh was in the Zoo and it was thrown a few raw chickens and was able to swallow them in one "fowl" swoop!;)

Ask the folks in Alaska about that..They have been barricading themselves at night into their "houses"[ if you can call somthing made of wood and chipboard a house], in Bear season against polar bear attacks long before "Global warming" ever was a fashionable state of fear to be in.The bears are attracted to the smell of rubbish and rubbish tips, not to mind the smell of cooking food as well. They just looveee us humans:eek::D. Std up there is a short double barrel with 00 and or slugs for dealing with B&E polar bears.

That was Hammonds escapade to the pole.Read his book "as you do" about the rules and whyfores and whereas, you must do to shoot polar bears, and in what situations or how.PC gone flippin mad!!!!
