quitting dairy?

I have been reading a bit lately about people having adverse effects to dairy - nothing too drastic, just subtle things that can be annoying.
For instance I notice a large amount of dairy can cause me to get quite congested in the sinuses.

So, I was considering quitting it - anyone here tried it ?

Any tips, tricks, side effects I should watch out for ?

    Thanks
    Rob

Check out SkinnyPotential's diary in the food diary forum, she gave it up for sinuses and has had great success!

I did it once, when I was breastfeeding a baby with a dairy allergy. It's doable, but it's a bit of a nuisance, as a lot of foods have some amount of dairy in them. But by all means, give it a go, and report back.

I was just considering the same thing myself.

For years now I constantly have a runny nose. If I'm out with friends and I'm talking or laughing a lot I begin coughing because of the amount of phlegm in the back of my throat. I also got a lot of headaches.

I drink a lot of milk so it's going to be hard giving it up for a week never mind forever. But in way I hope it is that that's been causing all my problems so at least I can fix them.

I found recipes online for homemade oat milk and rice milk so starting tomorrow I'm gonna do my best.

EDIT: I also find if I have milkshake it's mucus hell

Yup, I used to have chronic sinusitis so I gave up dairy about a year ago to see if it would make any difference. I've had sinusitis badly maybe twice since, when I used to have it pretty much constantly - it's helped so much.

I'd say go for it, see how you feel after six or eight weeks and whether you want to keep it up. If I have dairy now I really notice how stuffed up I am, it's a great incentive to stay on the non-dairy wagon. Plus there's lots of dairy free alternatives to milk, yoghurt, cheese and cream and plenty of cafes and restaurants have soya milk if you're out and about. You have nothing to lose! :)

Hey. Did you give up all foods with dairy in them. E.g. Doritos, chocolate ect. or just things containing a large amount of dairy like cereal with milk or yogurts?

I try hard to avoid it and would eat mainly very dark chocolate anyway, if at all. I try to choose food without milk or butter as an ingredient, but I'm sure I do eat it sometimes without realising. I would avoid the obvious things, milk, cream, cheese, butter, ice cream, yoghurt, and anything that has dairy as a main ingredient like quiche, lasagne, custard... It can be a pain sometimes but for me totally worth it!

    Is there dairy in Doritos???

If there is it's probably whey derived powder of some sort.

After cutting out main dairy sources for a bit like milk cream, cheese etc i noticed a difference alright. Introduced some hard cheese and whey and all was good, same with greek yogurt too but the min i had milk, major phlegm overload. I couldn't believe it!

Oh good, I need an excuse not to eat them! They're like crack to me :D
Yup I find that different things have different effects, I have butter every so often and don't really notice a difference but I ate some yoghurt raisins like an idiot a couple of weeks ago and got so stuffed up and ill! Never again!

On a related sinus front, aspartame gives me horrendous sinus headaches too, Coke Zero is the worst. Might be another thing to think about cutting out to see if it makes a difference.

I imagine it's because butter has the worst dairy offenders removed i.e caesin. Maybe try a little greek yogurt and see how you get on too - stay away from the greek style yogurts and go for either fage greek yogurt (in tescos) or lidl do a 1kg tub too. You might get on okay with that.

That's interesting, thanks. I don't know what part of milk is mucous forming - I've never tried lactose free milk/yoghurt cos I wasn't sure if it was the lactose that's the problem or something else (like casein).
