How do you know when you need new runners?

I've had my mizunos for about 14 months, didn't wear them between Jan- March this year. I would estimate 600-700 miles on them with a lot of my winter mileage on the treadmill. They're starting to look a bit shook to be honest and I feel like I'm "feeling" the road surface and stones etc more than I should be. I've also been starting to feel quite shin splinty recently which hasn't happened much since I started running last year so I'm wondering if it's time to say goodbye....:(
I've a pair of sauconys which were really comfortable and I wore them Jan- March but blame my big toe problems on them. I also have a pair of Asics which I wore Feb- May last year so low mileage on them but I can't for the life of me remember now why I changed them at the time. Whatever I wear will have my orthotics in them anyway so maybe i'll get away with it. Bad timing... i don't earn a bean over the summer :( I love my mizunos.

Generally if I start to get pains like that I'll take a look at the mileage on my runners - last time my ankles started to get sore. If they are heading towards the 500 mark I'll get a new pair and the old ones will be used for grass. I find after 600 miles the midsole is done in. It's onto gardening duty for them then :) Generally if I start to get pains like that I'll take a look at the mileage on my runners - last time my ankles started to get sore. Number of miles you get out of a pair depends on a fair number of variables, your weight, terrain used on, etc.

I guess if I'm thinking it then it must be so. They're on gardening duty then. Time to break out the penny jar. 12 miler on Sunday so will have to decide which ones to wear.

    1. old mizunos.
    2. Newish saucony.
    3. old but low mileage asics .

I'm thinking no. 3 is probably my best bet but I might wear them around the house a bit tomorrow to get a feel for them again.

I've ran on my Nike Air Pegasus for around 10 months now - my running has been too sporadic to estimate how many miles that is.
Still, I've started getting blisters again - big ones full of blood. And up until recently I wouldn't have known what "shin-splinty" meant, but after today I have an idea. Is it the shoes? Probably.
I'll get a new pair and see if that helps.

Usually when you haver to ask this question it means you need a new pair.

The honest answer for me is to switch them ever 6 months providing your using them regularly. Last year i was training for dublin so did alot miles in them.

For example this year I have been injured from May to start of July so the runners i bought in May will last till next May because not much mileage will now be done in them.

Be sure to get gait analysis done also, no harm making sure you have the right runners

I thought I had another month left in my runners, but last week they just felt dead. I rotate between pairs anyway, which I suppose makes it easier to tell the difference between tired legs and flat runners.

The last few pairs of Asics I owned seemed to have a wear indicator built into them, the toe box wears away so when I see my big toe wiggling that's how I know !

Haven't had a pair of shoes or runners that went like that since I was a kid, but I've now had a run of them, all Asics.

I knew I had to change my last pair when the black plastic on the sole wore completely away on the outside edge of the heels. This was after only about 350 miles.

I start to get niggles when my shoes are wearing out. It's funny you should say you started to "feel quite shin splinty recently", because that's exactly what I experienced recently, and my runners got a one-way trip to the bin.

I also record my mileage for each shoe, and they had 600 miles on the - yup, time for a replacement.

Slightly off topic rainbow kirby, but I remember you had a similar dislike to the Kayano 16's as I had. I went back to the 15's, but they are nearing their retirement, and I've had no luck in finding another pair. Did you go back to the 15's aswell, or did you get a different brand altogether?

I'm hoping to get gait anaylasis done in Cork next week.

Glad to hear it's not just me, thought I had mutant big toes or something! Same thing happened to my last two pairs of Asics gt2150's very quickly but there was still plenty of wear left in them.

Different brand. Brooks Adrenaline 10 and Nike Lunarglide. Actually wouldn't have minded another pair of 15s, but I also think my gait has changed subtly over the last while because the wear on the outside of the heel on every pair of Kayano 15's I had was getting progressively worse.

I had Mizunos they wore out after 200 miles (heel pain was the indicator)and I went to another store (stupidly) and was recommended Kayano 16's which had me running as if i were wearing flippers. I rang around everywhere today and have secured new Mizunos for this weekends lsr.:D I don't think I'll ever wear another brand.

Has to be a design fault in Asics, its always the upper (toe) bit that wears out first, happened to me with both kayano's and 2140. I'll be looking towards another brand for my next pair of runners.

That's grand so I've another few miles left in them yet!:p

Looks like I've been wearing these ones far too long. God bless the credit card.

Yip, 15s and 2090s for me, there was plenty of miles left in the 15s by the time the holes appeared. Didn't look too bad when wearing white socks, but were fairly obvious with any other colour, particularly black ! It was one of the reasons why I switched brand last time around.

Apart from general wear and tear, the main things that affect the life of trainers are:

Time: synthetics age-harden. You might have them only 3 months, but they may have been on display for 6 months before that - buy new out of the box!
Heat: Heat hardens (and shrinks) trainers - keep away from radiators/windows
Light: As per heat, but has a greater effect.

Worst thing you can do is chuck them on the back window of the car.

The fact that you might only have worn them, say, 4 times, in the past 12 months, doesn't mean that you've still got another 6 months life left in them. I find that about 6 months max and they're clapped out, whether they're used much or not.

A good test is to compress the heel area - if there's little or no 'give', get a new pair. Alternatively, checkout a new pair anyway, and compare.

Anyone need a pair of Kayano 16's size 11?

Good running sale on www.startfitness.co.uk at mo. I ordered a pair of Nike Triax on 29th July and they arrived today with a free technical t shirt and socks! Hard to argue with that. All in cost 72 euro.
