The corpses were discovered in individual plastic bags hidden around two houses in the tiny village of Villers-au-Tertre, about 35 miles from Lille.

Police were alerted after a family moved into their new home and found infant bones in the garden.

Officers traced the previous occupants, who were living less than a mile away in the hamlet.

Sniffer dogs found the bodies of more new-born babies there.

"Two people are being held in custody. They are the mother and father of the children," said public prosecutor Eric Vaillant.

Newspaper reports in France said the unnamed couple are both in their 40s.

Le Figaro said two of the bodies had been hidden in the first house for more than 20 years.

Local paper L'Observateur Douaisis said: "The couple will appear before a magistrate on Thursday morning charged with harbouring dead bodies."

It said the charges could be strengthened to murder as the forensic investigation continues.

France has seen a string of cases in recent years of mothers killing their new-born babies and hiding the corpses.

In March, a 38-year-old mother was jailed for 15 years for killing six of her newborn babies and hiding their bodies in bin liners in the cellar of her home in Valognes, near Cherbourg.

Céline Lesage was found guilty of suffocating four babies and strangling two others after giving birth to them in secret between 2000 and 2007.

Another French woman, Veronique Courjault, was convicted last year of murdering three of her new-born children.

Her husband discovered two of the corpses in a freezer while the two were living in South Korea.

During the trial, psychiatrists said she suffered from a condition known as "pregnancy denial."

Really don't know what to make of this. Some seriously twisted stuff goes on out there.

Hoping nobody comes up with any quick puns for this one!

Terrible and sad story. This is one I most definitely do not see as a subject to see humour in.

May they rest in peace, blessed little angels. Amen.

I remember a story similar to this which happened in the early 20th century. A couple used to mind children for young mothers, but they suffocated the children instead and buried them in the garden.

When the mothers wanted to see thei children, they wouldn't let them. They even took money from the mothers long after the babies were killed.

When they were caught, they were hanged.

I was gonna put it in brackets, along the lines of (not related to religion). Then I'd only be accused of trying to incite religious hatred and taking away from the disgusting nature of the story.

Wonder where pregnancy denial came out of? A pathetic excuse tbh.

I really don't understand how people don't notice that these women are pregnant, unless they don't leave the house at all.

Surely they would have to though, and having that many, it would have to be noticeable.

To kill a child, don't know how somebody could live with themselves.

Looks like the number may rise. The Guardian says:
According to French radio, the arrested woman – a mother of two – told police that the corpses are those of two newborn babies to whom she gave birth in secret. RTL said she had admitted killing "a dozen" others since 1988, and kept her actions from her husband.

You are the type of what the age is searching for, and what it is afraid it has found. I am so glad that you have never done anything, never carved a statue, or painted a picture, or produced anything outside of yourself! Life has been your art. You have set yourself to music. Your days are your sonnets.

was only reading about that a while back. It's awful. If they didn't want kids, they should've used protection or got the snip or tubes tied or something. How could they live knowing their dead babies were in the house.

    RIP.

As a parent of four beautiful young children this story really hits me hard as I think of their smiling faces looking up at me every morning, they being delighted to see me.

There is no understanding of anyone that can do this terrible, horrorfying act. It is truly beyond me.
I don't know what else to say.

As someone who, at the back of it all (and despite my giving out about them!), loves kids and thinks they're so cool, this breaks my heart. The poor little mites...

I hope that wherever they are now, that they don't know the pain and suffering that was inflicted upon them in this life...

Sometimes I hear a story that just astounds me, I can't even begin to comprehend such a frame of mind that someone must be in to do this. Babies ffs

Infanticide has occurred in every culture on every continent throughout history. Linkie.

It has been a primitive method of family planning and also of population control. Mothers have killed their newborns for many reasons (shame being a popular one in Ireland, where women are held to blame for being 'immoral'* - remember the Magdelene Laundries?) and also because of psychiatric disorders.

*(Not so far away from the 100 lashes for the single pregnant girl in Pakistan or wherever - oh those immoral women who do be corrupting our men!)

so she says she gave birth to two of the six found dead? where did she get the other two? and how does a husband not notice wifey preggy and then unpreggy?

RIP all those poor babógs :(

Hope the mother gets the help she needs

Btw . . . denial of pregnancy is a very real syndrome. I don't know if the mother in this case suffered from it but a little less of the calls of bull**** please.

Hang on a second, I may be missing a detail or two on this story. They were their own babies? Christ, you think you've heard some pretty messed up things in your life, and then you hear something like this.

Nah, that just happens when there's widespread child abuse by members of catholic orders and the church conspires in their protection.

This sort of thing is hardly rare, Annie Lovett went to her death at a grotto secretly pregnant, the Kerry Babies is another and yet to be solved...

No but she was pregnant for all (not) to see, or maybe be willing to see. Ireland was well and truely messed up back then. We live in an age of enlightenment by comparison.

Absolutely shocking.. I wonder who the babies belonged to.. I'm sure if will all come out in the wash..

A couple have been arrested after the bodies of eight newborn babies were found in northern France.
The corpses were discovered in individual plastic bags hidden around two houses in the tiny village of Villers-au-Tertre, about 35 miles from Lille.

Police were alerted after a family moved into their new home and found infant bones while digging a swimming pool in the garden.

The bodies of two babies were found at that site.

Officers traced the previous occupants, who were living less than a mile away in the hamlet.

Sniffer dogs found the bodies of six more newborn babies there.

"Two people are being held in custody. They are the mother and father of the children," said public prosecutor Eric Vaillant.

A local councillor said the unnamed couple are both in their 40s. He said the husband is a builder and his wife a nursing assistant.

Le Figaro newspaper said two of the bodies had been hidden in the first house for more than 20 years.
Sky's Alex Rossi, at the scene, said: "Investigations are continuing but the couple have been charged with burying bodies illegally.

"But we are told these charges may be increased to manslaughter or murder depending on the direction this case takes.

"Although investigators are warning that the couple should not be judged by the media, as they say at this stage there may be extenuating circumstances."

The former mayor of the village, Daniel Collignon, said he was "still in shock" after hearing the news.
