2010 PDC European Championship

PHIL TAYLOR opens his challenge for a third successive PartyPoker.net European Championship title on Thursday, when he takes on Co Stompe as the £200,000 tournament begins in Dinslaken, Germany.
Taylor has lifted the European Championship trophy in each of the past two years since the tournament was launched in 2008.
The world number one travels to the Stadthalle in Dinslaken on a high after winning his 11th World Matchplay last Sunday, as he seeks to win a fourth major title inside three months.
"Winning the World Matchplay was great and I'd love to go on and win the European Championship this weekend," said Taylor. "I'm feeling great and playing well, and winning this would round off a perfect summer."
Taylor takes on Co Stompe in the first round, with the Dutchman having defeated him in the 2008 German Darts Championship final.
"Co has done brilliantly in the last couple of years and he played superbly when he won the German Darts Championship, but that was a different day," added Taylor.
"I put it behind me and so has Co, and we've played a few times since. He did well in the World Matchplay last week and I know he'll want that to continue in Germany."
Stompe followed that German Darts Championship victory with two World Championship quarter-final appearances, as well as winning a Players Championship a month ago and reaching the last eight in Blackpool.
"The win over Phil is in the past and you can't dwell on that because it's history," said Stompe. "It's a new game on Thursday and I've got a hard game against Phil.
"I've turned my game around, because I've been practising on my doubles and they went alright in Blackpool but my scoring let me down.
"I know I can play better than I did in Blackpool, and I'll go up there on Thursday and hopefully give Phil a big fight."
The tournament's opening night will also feature the eagerly-awaited clash between two of the sport's fastest throwers, Jelle Klaasen and Vincent van der Voort.
The Dutch pair have both enjoyed strong form in 2010, while Klaasen - a European Championship semi-finalist last year - reached the quarter-finals of last week's World Matchplay with a slightly slower throwing style.
"I tried to slow down and it felt good," he said. "I'm always trying to improve my game and I've tried something new on stage now, and I played well.
"I think I'll try to play slower now in every tournament. It will be a hard match to play against Vincent because we travel all the time and are good friends, but when we get on stage we're enemies and want to beat each other 6-0."
The players ranked fourth and fifth in the world, Mervyn King and Terry Jenkins, have an opportunity to bounce back from first round exits in the World Matchplay when they face Barrie Bates and Germany's Andree Welge respectively.
Simon Whitlock, the Australian who has jumped to eighth in the PDC Order of Merit following his run to the semi-finals of the World Matchplay, takes on two-time World Champion Dennis Priestley on his European Championship debut.
The tournament will open when Paul Nicholson, January's Players Championship Finals winner, faces Andy Smith - who had minor surgery on a leg injury a week ago but has previously won a Players Championship on the Dinslaken stage.
Gary Anderson, the UK Open finalist who has been troubled by a shoulder injury in recent weeks and lost to Klaasen in Blackpool, meets Jamie Caven, and number eight seed Mark Walsh faces Spanish debutant Antonio Alcinas.
World number two Raymond van Barneveld - who hit a nine-darter in the World Matchplay before losing to Taylor in the final - takes on Andy Hamilton on the second night of play on Friday, while number three seed James Wade faces Colin Lloyd.
German pair Tomas Seyler and Bernd Roith are in action on home soil, with Roith taking on Denis Ovens on his televised debut while Seyler meets Michael van Gerwen - the Dutch youngster who has been sidelined for the past month with a broken collarbone.
The PartyPoker.net European Championship is being shown live on Sport1 in Germany and on Bravo in the UK - Bravo can be found at channel 123 on Sky and 136 on Virgin Media.
Coverage on Bravo will be fronted by Dave Gorman and James Richardson throughout the tournament.

Does anyone know who the presenters and commentators on Bravo are?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,836 ✭✭✭TanG411

I believe it's Chris Mason and Alan Warriner doing the commentary.

James Richardson is supposed to be doing player interviews.

    yes ;)

He's a stand up comedian, also recently done a few sort of travelling shows.

Decent aul crowd there, some prick keeps shouting out when Jenks throwing though

I like Mason as a commentator, he's easy to listen to.

    I've done a double on tonight : Stompe(13/2) & Caven(7/4)....daft yes :D

Reckon 1st round is as good as the last for a possible Taylor upset and its only best of 11 so if he takes a few legs to get into it then Stompe could get a lead. Took Caven as Anderson looked dreadful in his last matchplay game, his dodgy shoulder could still be bothering him.

Worth £2 for bit of interest

Your man calling the scores sounds like he should be down the local bingo hall. Very annoying voice. Camera work is ****e aswell. Not impressed with the coverage. Hopefully it sorts itself out

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 420 ✭✭KrazeeEyezKilla

When you're struggling with the camera work the last thing you want is Klaasen & Van Der Voort going round the board at their speed. They were switching to 19 so many times the camera man seemed to give up for a couple of minutes.

Not a great night of darts. Standard wasn't the best from most of the players bar Mark Walsh, Simon Whitlock, Barrie Bates and of course Taylor.

Bravo's covergae was terrible but the only consolation is that they know it was, What was going on witgh the scoreboard? It only worked for the first couple of games then was completely wrong for the rest. They just gave up on it in the end. The camera work was awful as well, they completely missed a 142 checkout by Klaasen. James Richardson tried his ebst but clearly knows nothing about darts. The commentary was good though as was Dave Gorman who seems to know his stuff.

    Hopefully it improves for tonight.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 465 ✭✭greened

Hopefully things will improve. I found it hard to watch for all the reason listed above.
I thingk that they really need to get a darts player as a spotter for the camera man so he can tell him what number the player is likely to throw at. I think he gave up with Klassen and Van der Vort game. Had no idea of where they were going to throw at next and could not keep up withthe pace when he did!

    It can only get better!

Eric Bristow was doing the spotting for them last night, Warriner-Little mentioned it a couple of times during commentary. It shows that the cameraman was even worse considering he couldn't follow Bristow's instructions. Of course Bristow could easily have been telling him the wrong thing :)

As bad as Bravo are at covering darts at least they have the 2 best analysts in the game in Warriner and Mason and they make the coverage worthwhile looking at. It can only get better for Bravo, this is their 1st time covering darts so there's bound to be a few problems at the start, hopefully it'll improve.

ITV used to be brutal to start with as well. Haven't heard any of Dave Gorman but if he's knows anything about darts he's an instant improvement on Colin Murray who seems to wear his ignorance like a badge of pride

colin murray is a bbc 'pundit/commentator"/ballbag, he was doing the bdo coverage.

When ITV started the GSOD it was pish, but they got it together. Can't remember the name of the fella who does the ITV coverage of darts, its the same bloke who does a lot of their football coverage, decent enough sports presenter + he's a Liverpool man too! :)

    Tonights quad bet :- Dudbridge(5/6), Jones (11/8), Lloyd (2/1) & Newton (10/11)

Obviously Lloyd is the outsider in there, but the last few tournaments I've seen him in he has started brilliantly! Fell away in later rounds and he was all over Painter for first 8/9 legs at the matchplay so reckon he could maybe give Wade a game.

    Messege I got earlier from Alan Warriner-Little;
I think the guy who did the software for it has been kicked up the backside more than once, it was pants and hard to follow in the commentry box, we had to guess most of the time, should (Hopefully) be better today...keep letting us know how it is and any comments to make it better, we give them ideas all the time

So close to a nice little bet there! Only had 2 quid on it and would have been a nice little sweat if it hadn't been the 1st game that lost :o

Up few pound anyway, bet on the other 3 in singles and Lloyd +2.5 handicap

Think Caven at evns is a great price. He's been playing very well and Jenk's form has been dodgy.

Reckon Lloyd's scoring will be too much for Baxter.

Walsh is 10/1 to beat Taylor  Obviously Taylor is fantasic, but if I were to pick 3 or 4 players that could beat him in a tournament like this I reckon Walsh would be one of them. I'm not decided what Im betting on this yet.

Jones 9/4 to beat Barney looks good to me, been playing very solid recently
