Ya you can use any sim. You'll need to get a micro-sim from Meteor or cut your own one down to size.

really appreciate that. thanks for clearing it up.

I wonder when apple will allow people to buy the iPhone 4 online? or even compuB

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 267 ✭✭iancairns

Is there any chance at all at getting a Sim free iPhone on Friday from any stores? Even if you queued up early for them. Or is the only option just purchasing online from apple and then waiting on delivery?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,129 ✭✭✭Jofspring

Seems delivery from Apple might be the only option for now. Somebody mentioned that compub in Limerick said they doubted they would have any phones this friday and it will probably be next week or the week after that.

from what i can gather from all the stuff i have bee reading is that ireland is getting feck all sim free phones in the first batch. they go on sale on the apple site the same day as release here so its just a matter of buying it from there waiting a little bit longer for it to arrive.

How long will it take is the question?

million dollar question! after seeing the price plans that have come from 3 and vodafone im goin sim free all the way. there is no option to pre-book/buy the new iphone on the apple website yet so i presume that will aririve on release date?

the uk apple site is saying the waiting time is 3 weeks but it has been out there for a good bit.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,129 ✭✭✭Jofspring

If they go on sale online Friday and they have a three week wait for delivery like the UK and US then i'm going to just try my luck in compub a few times or London when i go over in two weeks if i haven't one by then.

not a bad idea. im going to try compub dublin and hope they have one but id say the chances of that are pretty damn small. looks like il be waiting for 3 weeks for one. at least im not left handed so no antenna issues :p

So, where to get the iPhone 4 Sim Free in bricks and mortar on release? Will Apple online store allow us to order online on the 30th?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 337 ✭✭glorified g

it was available to buy online in the uk on the same day as the shops got it afaik. im banking on it anyway. thoughts of a trip to compu-b from wexford to "maybe" get a phone does not appeal to me.

    gone

OK dUDES, RESERVATION IS NOW GONE!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,135 ✭✭✭fifth

Rang carphone warehouse who aren't getting any sim free for a while didnt say how long. In wexford, they will have 6 handsets..split between o2 and voda and NO 3 network handsets.

The more i think of it, surely Apple won't give the networks all the first batch of iphone 4's and will keep some available to be sent out straight away once bought from apple.ie

I think it is likely that Apple do have some in stock for people buying on line. The trouble is though it is likely to be Tuesday at the earliest before you get it. However, as far as I know Apple's Irish distribution centre is based in the UK so if UK customers have to wait 3 weeks maybe we will to.

I wish they would just update their website. I'm probably going to be sitting here pressing refresh @ midnight and then again in the morning!

If that's true then it'll be three weeks. But I'll wait that if it's definitely going to be 3 weeks and no more.

I thought the distribution center for the UK and Ireland was in Cork?

I wish they'd just tell us what time we could start ordering. I'm hoping for midnight, but if I have to force myself to wake up at 6AM or 7AM on my day off, then I will.

I also doubt that we will have the 3 week wait like the UK has at the moment. They surely have to have made provisions for the Irish release?

As far as I know the distribution centre is in the UK but the European HQ is in Cork.

Ah right ok, I must have gotten them mixed up. I knew something was in cork :P

Ok I have checked both the Singapore and Australian Apple websites since as far as I know, those are currently the only 2 regions that are past the midnight mark on launch day, and neither of them have the iPhone 4 up for sale on the site. It's almost 8AM in Oz I think...

    Worrying.

Maybe they'll wait until 8 or 9 in the morning to put them up for sale.

Hmmmm it's 10am in New Zealand and it's not for sale on their website either...

    Really? Crap.

I cannot express how excited I am, and I just want one.

Looks like they don't have any in NZ! - http://www.nbr.co.nz/article/iphone-4-where-art-thou-127085

Oh I had completely forgotten I read about NZ on Macrumors hours ago, lol

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 33 tallpaul83

I think it's pretty obvious it won't be on sale on the apple store from midnight as people hoped. It's well into the morning in Oz and it's still not on their website AND given it is a global release the furthest west country is Canada - and Vancouver is 8hours behind us so if it was to be a simultaneous release on their website it won't be before 8am tommorow Irish time. Maybe they want to give the networks a few days grace.

i read on boards that its 8am sale time here. the waiting list is 3 weeks in the uk so are we automatically forced to wait 3 weeks because it will be coming from there??. what is everyone gonna do about the micro sim. im meteor and they wont have them for a while so im stuck.

Just cut down your sim, that's what I'm doing.

I bought a stencil and adapter from www.gomicrosim.com for €4, and then when Meteor release their microsims in a few weeks I'll just transfer my number properly.

As I said already, I highly doubt we will have to wait 3 weeks for shipping. They surely must have made provisions for us.

    No idea, sorry.

I hope you're right about them having enough stock though. I was kinda holding on to the sad notion that they might take orders at midnight and then deliver them all over the country tomorrow, lol.

Three.ie are out of stock already.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 337 ✭✭glorified g

i take back everything i said. il be up early to try and buy one from apple.ie. at this stage all i can hope for is a relatively short waiting time for delivery.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 776 ✭✭✭Jafin

Yep looks like it from previous forums in the UK, apple store goes down everywhere to update..

From reading that forum they all had the same problems in the UK re: updates from apple and carriers so all is not lost yet.

apple.ie is live..... ship time of 3 weeks!! :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,129 ✭✭✭Jofspring

Its up but with a 3 week wait :(. Thinking of leaving it and trying my luck in compub or in england.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,828 ✭✭✭unklerosco

Well I ordered one anyway... Heading to UK on Tuesday, if I can get one there I will n will sell on this one.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,129 ✭✭✭Jofspring

Thinking of ordering and chancing it will come sooner than 3 weeks.

Edit: ordered it. I will be waiting for a micro sim from Meteor anyway so i may aswell hold out three weeks, even though its going to kill me to wait.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,814 ✭✭✭Rezident

Do they really have no 32Gb ones!?

First teh carriers rip everyone off, then apple have no 32Gb phones, it's like they actualyl want me to get a HTC instead.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 550 ✭✭✭Pulse8

At first it was only 32gb available....now they have both up

Thats what I'm hoping for... I figure, even at 3 weeks it's still better than getting lucky enough to pick up a sim free one from a retailer...
