I'm guessing that the mkvs that don't work probably have DTS audio. You could try mkv2vob, it might sort out your problem.

What audio codec is it for the files that won't work? most work on my WD TV apart from ones that have AAC audio

The audio being played might not be supported by your HDTV over HDMI.

If you have stereo out of the WD box, hook it up to your Hi-fi or stereo inputs of your TV and that might solve the problem.

    im not using hdmi cable

    im using the red,yellow,white connectors

most of the mkv are x264 ???? if that rings any bells

Well then the WD simply might not support the audio codec used in the MKV container.

As far as I'm aware x264 is the video codec used.

yeah tis DTS sound thats causing the problem, did you ever notice the WDTV player displays "digital sound" when it cant decode the DTS track?

use this handy free app released by the maker of the Popcorn hour to decode the audio

mkv2vob should sort you out, just tick the Always transcode DTS box. Auvers app probably does the same job, not sure though.

    mkv2vob

that program coverts them to MPEGS

    4.5gb mkv to 6gb mpeg

will they still be 720 hd ????

You seem to have missed Auvers post? That will sort your problem out, and the new mkv file will be the roughly the same size.

Converting will should only take a few minutes. If you've got lots of files to convert you can set it to run through each of them. Don't worry if one movie doesn't need converting, its smart enough to see that and skip to the next movie.
