Courier van damaged my property... What to do...??

    Folks, a reputable courier service van delivered goods to my house, I was not at home at the time, so a note was left on the front door stating that the parcel was on the back door. I located the parcel and all was well until this morning..

    I looked out the front window and saw that one of the metal poles in which sits a photosensor for the electric gates was rolled into the ground. This pole is (or was two feet high).

    I have cameras installed under the roof eaves. It is quite visable from the recording that the van drove over the metal pole, the driver then got out and had a look at the pole and got back into the van and drove off. I cannot make out the van registration plate but have all the delivery documentation.

    I contacted the guys that installed the automation and they said it would cost 250 euro to replace.

    Can I claim this back off the courier company? Should I contact a soliciter before I ring the courier company? Any help, advise much appreciated, thanks...

    If it was me, while probably not necessarily the best way to go about it, although it might be, I would send the manager of the company (Irish Manager if its international) the recording plus either a quote for the repair or if the repair has to be carried out regardless of where the money comes from, the invoice from it.

    No need for a solicitor at this stage, if things start getting awkward maybe get one in, but if you're in any way decent at negotiation, and if the video is as clear as you make out, you should have no problem getting the money off of them.

    Quick though also, maybe give them a ring, ask for a manager, tell them the situation including about the video, and see what their response is. It'd be a pretty good way of gauging their response to a letter and video.

    Yeah ask for a manager first and tell him you wanted to talk to him first before you consult a solicitor. That might get his attention.

    Ok, I took your advice. I rang the company and got through to a service agent who took all the details. I explained that I have video evidence of the courier delivering the parcel then leaving my premises and in the process rolling over the photosensor pole with the back wheel of the van. I also explained that I contacted the automation company for a quotation to repair the damage. So, all in all I told the person that I could send pictures of damage, video footage via usb pen and quotation from the automation company. I was told to hold on that a service manager would contact me today..........still waiting!

    All was discussed in a very polite manner on both parties behalf, I didn't mention solicitor once but did stress that the damage will have to be paid for by the courier company or the driver.

    The more I look at the footage the more it amazes me how he managed to roll it....!! But what really get me is that he got out of the van, inspected the damage to the pole and then drove off...... :eek:

    They have to talk to the driver and inspect the van before they will contact you back. They have their own internal investigation process to do first before they look at outside evidence.

    It is still ongoing. The courier claims department/manager and the driver have been in contact with me. I have been advised that I will definitely be reimbursed for the damage caused. I hope to have the issue closed by the end of this week. I will post when payment is received.

    The issue was resolved. The courier personnally came back to me with a cheque. The cheque was made out to the security company that repaired the damaged post. I presume the cheque was successfully lodged... closed..

    Good result, nice to see the company act professionally and not to be dragging there feet, i no doubt that you will not have a problem using them again.

    Glad to hear it worked out for you, but please don't seek specific advice in this forum in the future.
