Guitars/pickups with different output levels?

How do you all get around using different instruments with different output levels, or guitars with pickups with different outputs? I guess I'm talking about a gig/rehearsal situation here.

I've got a Telecaster with a hot rails pickup in the bridge position. It sounds great for some of the more aggressive songs I play with my band, but when I need to lose that bitey tone and clean it up, I switch to the neck (middle position is still a little too loud/trebley) and get much quieter.

I'm waiting on new pickups and a new vibrato unit for my Jazzmaster, so I can start using that with the band too, and I guess I'm going to have much the same problem (getting some 'vintage style' pickups).

Is there a way around this? Compressor pedal? Boost pedal for use with the quieter signals? Surely these would boost the quiet signals up to the point where they crunch just as much as the louder ones, same problem? I'm thinking out loud now...

Is this a problem for you?

You can try and adjust the height of the pickups. You should be able to match the volumes of the neck and bridge a bit better with some slight adjustment. I use my neck for solo's and have that pickup set a little higher so for me when I switch I get a little bit of a boost that helps get the part a little louder. So it's not a problem for me really. And when I switch guitars I tend to compensate with the amp settings. I need to up the gain for my tele if my amp is setup for my Schecter already.
However, I don't really see what your problem is? It sounds like you want to switch to the neck for the quiter parts and that seems to be working ok with the lower output.

When I have the bridge humbucker on, the amp gets pretty crunchy, also very trebley. I'd like to have a clean tone at the same volume, rather than a much quieter clean, with the less harsh tone of the neck pickup.

Good point though, my post was a little confusing. I said 'quieter signals', but I guess I meant weaker signals - the output from the hotrails is pushing my amp into a bit of saturation, which I like, but I'd like my clean neck pickup to be the same volume, just not saturated.

I'll try adjusting heights later on!
