Think Discover Ireland are over-doing it?

I dont think you can have an ad break anywhere that doesnt feature that Heathers song and some minor festival/event going on somewhere in the country this summer.

Dont get me wrong, its great for the normally dormant areas that they are getting such promo etc but Im thinking that its bordering on overkill at this stage. The idea is of course, to get Irish people behaving like tourists in their own country, offsetting the need for Yanks who have decided that paying €20 for Larry Leprechaun is no longer a good deal.

The problem is that we, the public do fall for this glamour. Indeed, in the past year or so, ive done the Burren, the Cliffs, Arts Festival, the Races, various local festivals in the midlands and so forth. Ive also been abroad, and other than the UK, ive only felt short-changed when coming back from irish places.

Is it just me or are these ads doing more long-term damage to the industry through constant dissapointment to the public?

    Typical Conversation
Kids mate: How were the Cliffs
    Kid: Sh1te

For me, the places need to sell themselves without killing us with over-hype.

Decided the two sisters were depressed and suicidal when they wrote and sang it they sound so heartfelt! Bet they feel a bit happier now their song is on tv all the time and have no plans to get away but would rather stay at home and hear their song on the tv!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you've watched those ads and found them appealing. ie. making you want to go to the West etc. then Discover Ireland have done their job.

Not their fault you didn't enjoy it.

Did you really expect to re-live the ads :o

Not exactly, there is a lot that this country has to offer and I think it has been forgotten in the rigmarole of the last decade with people jetting off to States one week and Thailand the next. Nothing wrong with promoting the tourism industry domestically at all. At all at all.

i dont think any ads would help in my view as long as a week in a poxy chalet in tramore costs the same as return flights to mauritius.

Most northern europeans idea of going on holiday is to go somewhere as hot as possible and burn themselves to a deep shade of pink so they can boast to their neighbors when they get home.

Its quite a stretch to try and drag those people to a cliff or a castle in their gasp own country and expect them to appreciate it without any risk of melanomas.

I think Discover Ireland is doing the right thing in changing some peoples minds and reminding them about what we have to offer.

Well, it's certainly not my idea of a holiday.

Don't get me wrong, a little sun and sea is all dandy but can't that be achieved while learning about a little world history, tasting the finest foreign culinary has to offer, visiting a cultural hotspot etc?

I haven't toured all Ireland but I've seen enough and it is a beautiful country. I spent 200Euro to spend a night in Ashford Castle. It was an amazing experience. Ireland is beautiful. But when it comes to making financial sense, abroad is BEST.

Yes. Unfortunately its price where we lose.

And its sad because we need the money.

The ads have to be aspirational, don't they? I have to say I enjoy them, especially the blonde going surfing! :)

I was thinking the same thing. Listen to the latest ad on the radio even the one doing the voiceover seems to be tiring from it.

I’ve seen the cliffs too and I was pretty impressed by them (there size and looking over the edge and all) but you know they are just cliffs so what exactly were you expecting?

How were they sh!te? Where they less cliffy when you went?

instead of going to the cliffs of moher, go down to kilkee and do the cliff walks there.
no fencing, no car parks, no samaritians posters

Jesus ****ing christ I hate that piece of **** song. Every time I go to the cinema it plays that ad before the film. I always forget about it, sit down all excited and then have to suffer the ear bleeding horror of Tegan and Sera. Sorry I mean The Heathers.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13,992 ✭✭✭✭gurramok

They're not kidding us with that wonderful ad. We know how expensive it is to holiday in Ireland where its cheaper to holiday abroad. They should run a campaign to reduce the prices first and then have those nice touristy ads on tv.

Shouldn't these ads be overplayed abroad and not sold back to us Irish in Ireland??

They can sell it all they want but you still need a shed load of dosh to go anywhere and do anything!

One week rental in Waterford for a week €625 for 2 people.

One week in Portugal with all inclusive €400 per person!

If only one could afford all these highs and lows! :D

Should they not be broadcasting these adverts on TV and radio stations in other countries, and on the internet, to attract overseas tourists instead of bombarding Irish people, who already know what's going on where?
Although it's good from the point of view that we saw a load more people going on "staycations" this year.
    Just sayin'.
