Cost of Running a Family Car Down???

According to the AA the cost of running a family car has fallen by almost €400 in the last year - yet they admit that fuel costs have risen sharply and that insurance is only slightly down. There has been no change in tax so what the bloody hell are they on about???

AA Roadwatch said that it now costs €11,171 to run a small family car in the Band C category (typical engine size of 1251 – 1500cc), a drop of 3.4%.

However, fuel costs are up sharply over the past year - in June 2009, petrol cost 116c per litre, and jumped by almost 15% to 133c per litre this year.

The cost of buying a new car has fallen by 3.42% on average, with more significant falls in the cost of higher-end cars.

The cost of insurance is slightly down on last year, by 1.3%. However, the AA said insurance prices had risen by 9% in 2009.

I imagine the calculation includes depreciation from new.

From June 2009 to June 2010 I had a Family car - even bigger because it was Mondeo.
It costed me nothing even close to this.
It was less then 5000 euros in total (insurance, tax, depreciation of car value, service, petrol, etc), and I drove with this car over 25k miles, so only the petrol price was almost 4000.

Please don't post rubbish, it only serves to clutter up the thread.

Hard to see where they get the figures from.
They must be looking at depreciation as the main factor here so surely they should be commenting on how small engined cars are holding their value better than in previous years instead of muddying the waters by saying running costs are down, particularly when people are focussing on the price of petrol and diesel.
Looks like they missed a good opportunity here to encourage the use of smaller cars.

Depreciation 4000 per year. Look on carzone for estimated drop per year.

Fuel depends on mileage. 75 euro per tank doing 1000kms or thereabouts. For me about 4000 per year.

    Insurance on family car 600

    Tax pre-08 car 2L diesel 600, post 08 car 2L 150 or thereabouts

Cost of servicing loan. Do not know current rates. 12% of total loan value seem reasonable. 20000 loan would add 2400 or 800 per year. Car cost taken care of in depreciation figures.

Servicing costs and tyres 1000 if your lucky (again depends on mileage. Tyres 550 and indy service for 450)

    So, 4000 + 4000 + 600 + 600 + 800 + 1000 = 11000 euro for 50000km per year or 22 cent per kilometre.

The actual running cost will be higher if accounting for repayments on loan per year and depreciation figure only comes in to play on re-sale.

Feel free to thrash my figures but these are actual costs for a 2L mondeo in 06 and I only updated the fuel costs figure and car tax figure. I think they are pretty accurate. Does beg a question why we are paying civil servents so much in mileage rates but that is a question for another day.
