Running HR V's Cycling HR

    I had a V02max test done on a treadmill so have all the training heart zones to train while running but i want to know would there be a difference for the heart rate zones for cycling? So would 80% HR for running be the same for cycling?:confused:

    Not an expert on this but i reckon that the HR would be standard across the board. The difference would come in the percieved effort difference to reach these heart rates at the different sports be it swim cycle or running

    when running you've a higher max heart rate I think?Your cycling one would be different,different muscle groups etc running is harder.
    p.s. i could be totally wrong :)

    different muscles true but is the heart the constant muscle in both i think just with running you reach your max heart rate easier like with cycling there would have to be alot more effort to get the same results which is why the mileage is so much higher in cycling training as opposed to running

    I had it done before on the bike, he gave heart rates for running also and they were roughly 10 beats higher for each zone, A1, A2, A3 etc

    Thanks for all the help with this, it all makes perfect sense. Going to work on the bases of the running HR been 10 beats higher until i get the cash to do the test on the bike.

    I've read that the difference, although your heart is a constant, is that on the run you also have the additional load of your full body weight, which adds a bias to the Heart rate. On the bike, a portion is supported by the bike saddle/bars and at a certain workload while the overall body workload is less (lower HR) then the specific workload of getting oxygen to those muscles is similar.

    Rough idea of what it was - no doubt its moved on in the years since that was proposed.

    Not an expert on this by any means but following Finks IM plan. Fink says that you allow approx. 10% lower HR per zone when on the bike as compared to the run. This gap narrows as you get fitter apparently.

    In my experience it's all down to your level of fitness in each discipline. I have done the 30 minute tests as prescribed by Friel for both bike and run. My zones were miles apart, well in excess of 10 beats for the bike and run. The bike was far lower. As my fitness on the bike has improved my HR has started to go up but is still 10+ beats below the run zones.
