Just saw the movie, i don't know why people are ranting and raving about the end, i mean...the start of the movie said 1991...then 10 years later, so i kinda knew and thought 9/11....but then they distracted me near the start with the teacher saying in class about the recent terrorist attacks, so i kinda guess 9/11 had passed, but even when the end reveal came...........

........i wasn't like OMG! , it was...ohh he's in the twin tower, so the ending wasn't a huge uber shocker, what annoyed me was i thought the murder at the start would somehow be linked in, like Pattison's brother had killed the mother at the start of the movie.

Or Pattison's father got the two guys off ten years ago and they then killed Ally's mother at the start, dunno...maybe they set it up like that, to distract you...to retain the "shock" ending, but honestly....that ending wasn't such a huge shocker.

9/11 was in the back of my mind the whole film.

    It's a ridiculous ending..

.. and the ending was criticised by practically every critic who endured it!
Critics have vastly different opinions about the film's jarring denouement:

Rolling Stone's Peter Travers declared in his capsule review: "It's all weepy drool until the twist ending, which is shockingly offensive."

Lisa Kennedy of the Denver Post assessed: "The finale manages to be tasteful and exploitative at the same time. It touts forgiveness while being mildly infuriating. Such is the danger of borrowing from the enormous to merely entertain. If that. Forgettable should be the last thing a movie touching on the events of 9/11 should be. Yet 'Remember Me' is just that."

Stephen Whitty of Newark's Star-Ledger, who liked the film, revealed in his review: "Movie fans should know that the story takes an abrupt third-act twist and tacks on the sort of arbitrary, 'significant' ending that's better left to first-year creative-writing assignments."

Rebecca Murray of About.com observed: "Even if you disapprove of just where the film goes, the story building up to the final climatic twist is moving and real."

Manohla Dargis of the New York Times, who liked Pattinson's performance, stated: "Along the way, many people die but few matter: most are just part of the warm-up act as well as the means to a shamelessly exploitative end."

Boo Allen of the Denton Record Chronicle charged: "'Remember Me' wallows deepest in shame by concluding its treacly treatise by drawing on the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks in a final plea for emotion. Unforgivable."

Pattison, as the character in the movie...was an asshole, i didn't like him on screen at all. Pasty looking and gaunt, like he just fell outta the Twilight movie. Add to which i had just before seen Dear John, which also had 9/11.

Jaysus.. you watched 'Dear John' and 'Remember Me'?

Fair fecks to you sir.. I'd rather staple my balls to my leg than endure them.

    ^ aye...yesterday i saw The Last Song :-)

    I'm gonna watch Uwe's Rampage tonight :-)

My problem with the ending is not that it exploited 9/11...it just seemed totally out of place and just "inserted", for shock value....but it didnt shock, maybe Americans were shocked.

It was a cheat. The rest of it was dull and bland, unoriginal pulp. The ending was tacked on needlessly. Meh

    *feels heart attack coming on*

Incredible film! Must be one of the most underrated films of all time..

And, yes, the ending was fecking brilliant..

Directed by Allen Coulter. He directed many of The Sopranos, Six Feet Under, Boardwalk Empire, and many more..

Tasteless ending designed to give a poor film some controversial publicity

The ending wasn't "Tasteless", nor was it a poor film. Now, hop over to the great Magnolia -pretentious, highfalutin, pompous navel gazing tripe..

Oh, I'm sorry how dare I have an opinion

Shall we set up your own thread where only people who share your opinion are allowed post?

Sorry if I annoyed you. I just think there's an awful lot of wánk on these forums lately. Like I love The Tree of Life or Magnolia and other pretentious wankable crap films. I do laugh at times though:) Just my opinion

Well that's your opinion, it's a film forum after all you're always going to get people who love a film you hate and vice versa

You don't need to refer to films as "pretentious wankable crap either", giving an informed opinion on why you didn't enjoy it is much more constructive to proper discussion

    Wow.

Opinion is opinion. Dismissing someone's views as pretentious says more about yourself than the person you're trying to insult. Now, let's just leave it at that, yes?

I'm not really sure what masturbation has to do with anything either, but hey, whatever you're into.

That was just my honest opinion, sorry. Will try to be a bit more diplomatic next time.

Fair enough. I love the bold, shouting! I know I'm wasting my time with a mod on boards.ie, so I'll just leave it at that!

Actually, the more I think of it, the more I think I'm entitled to have an opinion here. And I don't have to be a mod and express my opinions in bold.

Yes, I read your reviews of The Tree of Life on the other forum, and maybe this is what píssed you off more than the views on Remember Me?

I just think The Tree of Life is the biggest load of garbage ever to grace the cinema screens.. Lovely art, great direction, great writing and an absolute yawn fest. Boring beyond belief!

The masturbation (****) quote was a metaphor, and quite an appropriate one too :)

But of course you are. Yet you seem to be attacking anyone else who expresses one here!

 I don't mind you reading my reviews, that's why I tend to publicly post them.

That's fine and all (even if I'm a bit perplexed what more someone would want then lovely art, great direction and great writing). But you're the one who has brought up the Tree of Life in a Remember Me thread, which is a little bizarre. Not really sure why Tree of Life seems to rile up such rabid accusations of pretension either - some people genuinely like the film!

There's no need for hostility: you bumped an old thread with what seems to be the sole intention of attacking anyone who disagrees, and accusing them of all manner of snobbery if they like Magnolia but not Remember Me!

So yes, you're more than entitled to express your opinion on Remember Me. Or The Tree of Life (in the appropriate thread would be nice). But if you don't blindly go around insulting people with thinly veiled sarcasm for having a different opinion we'll all get along a little better, yes?

Now let's get back on topic, shall we?

To be fair, he used the word "pretentious" in reference to the films, not to anyone's opinions of the films. (Unless you're referring to another thread, which I've no idea about.)

He was dismissing my views as pretentious for giving Magnolia a positive review on another thread
