I'm from Dublin, living/working in Belfast.

I want to take lessons in Belfast (for experience), then take my test in Dublin. Lessons in Belfast is more suitable for alot of reasons.

I know I need a UK provisional, but do I need to take the theory test before I can take lessons or can I take lessons with just the licence ?

I already has an Irish provisional licence.

I'm pretty sure you'll have to take the theory test up there. I dunno about the north but the UK has a hazard perception test too

    Cheers.

Just to clarify, I won't be taking the UK or NI Test, only want to take lessons here.

The info you need you'll probably find here: http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/LearnerAndNewDrivers/index.htm

I wasn't aware of the Hazard test in the UK.

    Seems like a good idea.

Aye, was brought in a few years ago I think, isn't a bad idea at all. I think it might come in here too at some stage. The RSA roadshow bus has hazard perception software I think

I have friends//cousins up north and as far as I know you just get you provisional license by filling a form. You then have to do your theory and driving test to get your full license!

You'll have to do the Irish Theory test and hold your Cat. B Irish Learner Permit for 6 months before you sit the Irish test - you can't transfer your UK Provisional for an Irish Learner Permit.

You also can't drive in NI with an Irish Learner Permit.
