Havin a small problem with pto on my new holland. Was out topping yest evening and the pto seems to still be running a little bit even after a pull up the clutch handle. (And yes I wait'd and it's for momentum of topper rotors slowing down!!:D) If I drive into grass and put pressure on rotors it will stop pto running.

Is there an easy solution to this? Is it the oil level or something? It's hardly a SEAL. only 800hrs on tractor! Any suggestions as to what it might be?? Thanks:rolleyes:

On some toppers, the rotor can spin for up to 5 minutes after you disengage the pto. Does it happen with any other machinery???

There is a pressure plate in the pto..I think that's what's gone..Though it shouldn't be gone that quick! Is the tractor under warranty? Is the pto electric?

Try dropping the engine revs before you stop the pto. Topper blades spinning are probably too strong for the pto brake pad. As you've already said it stops ok in long grass.

I don't think there is anything wrong with the tractor but you need to be careful with stopping mowers or toppers as they can wear out the pto brake pad

If the seat's wet, sit on yer hat, a cool head is better than a wet ar5e.

Knew a fella always in a rush. Bought first rotary mower moons ago. Couldn't be waiting around for drums to come to a stop when ready to pull out of field. Stuck his leg in one day to help stop drum :mad:, left one wellie and a skelp of the leg in there:eek:

The pto is still spinning after the topper was taken off and the tractor running..............

Sure it should stop when the pto clutch is up, I think it's in a dangerous state at the mo...

is there adjustment on the clutch lever/cable?

for those of us unfamiliar with nh could you tell or perhaps somebody else tell what method is used to engage the pto , might help to solve the issue

snowman707, to engage pto there's a lever on LHS (like a handbrake), you press the button to release and let it down. With this system engaging the pto does not require foot clutch to be pressed, same as old MF 5 series, fiats etc......... (I'm sure there's loads more tractors with hydraulic clutchs that's why I thought problem would be an easy one to sort.....)

snowman 707, you hit the nail on the head regarding adjusting the hand clutch cable;)

And i've to hold my hands up and plead ignorance. My NH DOES NOT have a hyraulic pto as I said previously:o, I thought it did just because it had an independent clutch. Yes some NH's have, mine doesn't, it's a TD series, not a TL or TS.

We had an old fiat before we got the NH and to engage the pto you lifted hand clutch and engaged lever (T shaped handle). Then there was a seperate lever to switch between 'land drive' and 'pto'. When we switched to NH, it had a lever to switch between land drive and pto BUT it also has NEUTRAL in the middle that I never copped:mad:, (so there was no other lever needed for engaging/disengaging) .........I know stupid mistake on my part.

So basically I thought once the clutch was up and the pto stopped, it was DISENGAGED automatically...........not so

Anyhow drove it to local garage lad that is familiar with fiats and new hollands and he adjusted pto clutch cable and it has sorted the problem, thank God!

    glad you got it sorted,

was thinking it was something as such couldn't understand why 2 posters said it was the pressure plate with the symptoms you described :confused:

Eh because they are the symptoms of a worn pressure plate??

if you have been going around with the clutch disingaged like that your cable has stretched.

a fiat we had a sticker saying not to leave clutch disingaged like that,

    good tractor though

a stretched cable would be the least of my worries,

know of one instance on a duetz (spelling?) which cost €7000, tractor was driven for the winter months with the hand clutch pulled

You should never drive the tractor around with the clutch lever pulled like that. To disengage the PTO you should pull the lever, put the PTO into neutral and then release the lever again. If not you'll need a new clutch in no time.
