    Thanks Unkel!

Yeah the Roller is mine, I bought it on ebay 5 years ago, my first purchase using ebay! Its been featured on the Silver Shadow website as I am told its the only Rolls Royce in the Onyx and Highland Green colour combination in the world. There are two others in Onyx only remaining out of 6 made in that colour. Its a great car to go to shows in and I have had it in shows in Wales a couple of times as well.

Thanks Alanstrainor. I did test drive a CL55 AMG K but it would be hard to live with the noise it made plus it was twice the price of the one I bought and had almost twice the milage and was a year older to boot!

BTW was the CL500 owned from new by a certain hotelier, Mr O'C********?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,661 ✭✭✭Voodoomelon

    Love that interior, absolutely immaculate.

One thing that strikes me as something of a disappointment is the power output, 306bhp from a 5 litre V8? Even BMWs 2002 4.5l V8 produced 330bhp, I would have thought the CL would be in the 340+ range.

Still, not to be sniffed at!

I honestly don't know. I was told that the car was traded in against a Bently Continental. I would of course be interested in knowing more about it's history so send me a PM if you know more about her. I would guess it was not used by a family as it looks as though the back seats were never used!

Very cool video! Any chance the sequel will feature the other motors in your garage? :pac:

Believe me it's more than enough power as after all it is a cruiser first and foremost. Another reason I suppose why Mercedes didn't give it more power is that when they were launched the CL55 AMG which had 360BHP, it had to have a clear power advantage over the CL500 otherwise why buy it and since 2003 the CL55 got the Supercharger or Kompressor as Mercedes call it to give it 500BHP! so if you want maximum power then that was the choice to make. I test drove one CL55 (K) and it was a hell of a car but the noise was giving out the message that the driver was a bit of a boy racer type and that's not why I bought this car. I bought it as a cruising machine that I could flick into sports mode and a semi auto box and press the go faster pedal if I felt like a bit of fun but you don't attract the young fella in his twin cam corrolla sitting on your tail every time you go for a spin as this is what happens every time the Porsche is taken out for a drive!

Re. the Silver Shadow, lovely car. I seem to recall seeing one of a very similar (if not the same) colour a few times in Mullingar (around Castle Street) in very late 1978. As a kid with a passion for cars and sponge for a memory and detail, it stood out because it was unregistered (on trade plates) and had the headlamp wash-wipe, an exotic new upgrade for 1979 iirc. I may be wrong on this but have a vague recollection that it may have ended up on a Wicklow reg plate.

So you have a CL500, a Rolls-Royce and a Porsche. Now your telling us you have an iPad - we get it, you're rich :D (and I'm jealous)

No I was only playing about with the iPad in the Apple store. I have no intention of buying one, I got an iPhone 2 weeks ago after thinking of getting one for about 3 years only cause I can get a kit for it for the Merc!
The iPad is ridiculous looking IMHO as it's just a huge iPhone and sooo pretentious! I have my phone is a case so nobody can see what it is as I think even they are too much!

Not mine! See the link to the feature on the Rolls. Thanks for noticing it anyway!

No, didn't think it was yours. The reason for mentioning it was your comment about the rareness of the colour. I'm guessing that it and yours are probably of a similar production period too.

Thanks for the effort and well wear with the motor, its really a lovely car and a fine example.

Nice car, I have a notion that it is a UK import though, generally in Cork they struggled to sell ~20000 cars per year.
Anything above that (including my own two cars) seem to be imports. Most have some telltale signs of import. If it was an original Irish car then it must have been sold very late in 2004.
Who were you dealing with Paul?
Best of luck with it .

No. Irish from day one with all services carried out in McElligotts the main Mercedes dealers in Kerry! By the way there were 26,330 vehicles registered in Cork in 2004..........(I had a quick look at the CSO figures in case you think I am a complete anorak!!)
No it was Adrian, both of them are nice blokes. Thanks for the wishes, I really am enjoying it from the minute I fire her up in the mornings, is there anything sweeter than a V8.........:D

I saw this car advertised several weeks ago and I think the price was around €19k then. Its a pre facelift car so would potentially have a few problems that the 2003+ cars had ironed out and I see he does not mention service history so that would be a big concern if its not a fmbsh or if there are gaps in it but a fantastic car for the money in any event!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,661 ✭✭✭Voodoomelon

Absolutely, if the history is straight then its one of the most special cars you could buy; that's supercar territory for family hatchback money.

5.0 with a V8 , refreshing compared to all the " what Diesel?" threads on here lately :D

Just so you know Caddyman, i've officially caught the CL bug! Eyeing up CL600s in the UK, has to be a 03+ to get the 5.5l V12 bi-turbo, there's some value out there!

There's an absolutely beautiful CL63 AMG going for under £20k but I think they're a bit overkill, nothing wrong with the CL600, cheaper to buy and insure and 0.2 of a second slower to 60.

Any I always thought i'd buy nothing but saloons! :D

Also, there's bucket loads of CL500s going for £7-10k, and VRT is only €4,500. Lots of bargains people!

Christ thats shocking good value, considering they cost what over 70k new over here? I`d love one but I refuse to give the goverment that much money in motor tax.

    70k

A rough guess is that the cheapest CL (with not a single option ticked) back in '02 must have been about 160k...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,688 ✭✭✭✭mickdw

That CL has the facelift rear lights does it not?

Yes indeed, a 1976 coupe de ville. Baby blue with matching interior. 501 cubic inches. Cool car at the time.

What I don't understand is that CL600 isn't a facelifted model, which was the non-turbo 5.8 litre version. Yet they're saying it's the bi-turbo 500bhp model, which wasn't realised til 2003. Somethings amiss...

really gorgeous car's you have there i came very close to getting a Cl500 6 months ago myself they are going for such little money these days, ended up going for a V8 Bmw 6 series instead , which i love but i am fairly fond of the Cl , i see a 5.5 liter Bi-turbo V12 Cl600 on carsone at the moment for 15k  thats insanely cheap, i do love V8's though would find it hard to give up for the sound, the pace and the relaxed driving experience

I had a 2001 STS as an everyday driver and as it was RHD it worked out well but was only getting around 16/18 mpg which was a killer as I was doing a lot of miles at the time...... the 76' coupe was a nice car, I think I saw one at Moynalty yesterday, will surely be going to the American show next month in Kilbeggan. I think its on 11th & 12th Sept.
