Does anyone know how to set a bleed in CS5 and also how to convert from RGB - CMYK?

    Thanks!

rgb to cymk should be easy image >mode >click cymk and then save

a bleed area is for printing around the edges you would a number of pixels that would have nothing in it that would be important if lost.

so just resize the image increasing the size of the bleed X2

sothat you have a margin of the size of the bleed on each side.

    afaik :)

A good way to manage a bleed is to create an imagine that is the size you with plus the size of the bleed (x2 because you have to count the bleed of left & right edges, and top & bottom.. basically a line of "bleed" thickness around the whole image.)

then.. put in a set of guides at the edges that will show you where the bleed ends and the image begins.. then just make sure that anything in the image that you REALLY don't want to lose, is inside the bleed guides you set.

See example below (done in GIMP, not in Photoshop, but the concept, and the actual method, are really the same.. I did it just to be sure.) The example uses mm's for it's image sizing, and has a 5mm bleed marked off on all sides. The parts outside the bleed marks will likely be lopped off by whatever printed them with a 5mm bleed

Thanks Sheesh and Heebie! Eventually I will get my head around photoshop (though I think there is so much to learn I probably won't! :o)

So the bleed is actually the advert size plus the bleed?
My bleed is 5mm so Sheesh what I gather from what you have said is that I increase the canvas by 10mm?

Heebie thanks for the tutorial - for some reason though I can't figure out how to add guides in Cs5
I downloaded gimp to do it but it put the advert back into RGB and 72DPI..

    Thanks for the help!

To add guides hit Ctrl+R to turn on rulers on your image. Then "tear" guides from the rulers by clicking and holding the left mouse button on the ruler area and drag the mouse across your image.

Thanks 5uspect.. it seems I kinda forgot that bit! =O

Most bleeds you see will be on the outside of the size you want.. once in a while one will be a bleed inside the size.. but it's denoted differently. (I don't think I have it backwards... it's been a while since I did them.)

Ah okay think I have it now thanks Heebie.
What i've done is increased the canvas size by 10mm - it's in a different colour too but I don't think that will matter (the bleed was 5mm) and put guidelines on the advert as I had it done.

    I think that's right! (hopefully! lol! )

    Thanks a mil everyone!
