Ok I just bought my first camera (a canon EOS 1000D) a few weeks ago, a speck of dust got on the lens and the boyfriend tried to clean it off with a lens cleaning pad (I know we're eejits) and now there's a black splodge showing up on my photos! I'm a complete newbie to cameras and photography so I have no idea what to do, is there somewhere you can bring to get cameras fixed or do they have to be sent off to Canon themselves?? Thanks for any advice!

    Here's a picture showing up the mark (sorry for the size);

Which side of the lens is/was the dust on?

To me it just looks like a big dust spot on the sensor...

is it on the lens or on the sensor, as in when you look through the viewfinder can you see it, if you can't see it's probably on the sensor & at this stage I'd adviseyou get it cleaned professional or by some who has cleaned sensors before.

Can you bring it back to where you purchased it, they'll be able to clean it for you possible free of charge.

Oh sorry I think lens was the wrong word, you can't see it when you look through the view finder at all only on the pictures themselves. Although it has an automatic sensor cleaning function every time you turn the camera off it says 'cleaning sensor' so would that not remove dust? The dust he tried to clean of initially was on the square glass panel (sorry I don't know the name) that is in the body of the camera when you remove the lens. Do most cities have places you can get a camera fixed or cleaned or is it hard to find a specialist? Thanks for the responses!

There looks to be too much detail in it for a sensor spot...

I don't know why but it doesn't look like anyway dust I've even had on any of my sensors, It may be on the rear element on the lens.

I bought it on sale in Argos so I don't think they'd be much help!

Oh if I change the ISO setting when I use it on AV mode the edges of the speck go from really blurry (and so becomes quite unoticable) to really sharp, black and defined depending on the setting if that makes sense!?

are you taking about the mirror?

What may of happened was he just pushed the dirt further into the camera body.

The cleaning sensor only knocks of very fine particles of dust it doesn't actually clean the sensor.

If you go into any camera shop they should be able to dothis for you or recommend someone nearby who could do it.

I see you're in Cork if you go into Denis MacSweeney or the Camera World or Barker photographic & explain they should be able to help you out

I take it he put the camera into 'cleaning mode' with the mirror flipped up before attempting to dust off the sensor? [that is the glass you are looking at inside the camera]

Take the lens off again and check the rear element/glass of the lens itself as suggested. If the spot is on there you can try wiping it away with a spotless lens cloth [glasses lens cloth will do] Just breath on it and wipe away, with a micro-fibre lens cloth you can't do any damage.

If that doesn't work, take it into a camera shop like Conn's. They do a professional dry clean for €50, if it is on the sensor. they will tell you before hand exactly what the problem in, bring your lens/lenses with you.

Just be careful trying to clean any part of the camera innards without knowing what the end result might be.

Don't panic. That is probably just a bit of dust on the sensor.
Be careful how you proceed. You don't want to introduce any
more dust or damage the shutter. Have a look at it using a
bright light and a magnifying glass. It might also be a bit
of lubricating oil that has found it's way onto the sensor.

If you are in Cork City, you can try one of my lenses to
confirm that the spot is in the camera and not in the lens.

Wow thanks for all the great advice here guys I really appreciate it! Thanks very much for the kind offer hbr, I actually bought an additional macro lens with it and the speck shows up with either lens on. I don't think he put it into cleaning mode (?) before he tried to clean it, he did use a new lens cloth straight out of the packet and washed his hands before he cleaned it at the time but he's not here to ask just at the minute for any more details. I think he just flicked away the dust on the little square mirror inside and then the speck started to appear on pictures. He tried troubleshooting for it on the canon website and thought it may be that in disturbing the innards of the camera some oil has become lose and fell onto something, but we can't see where it is. That's great to hear there's someone in Cork who might be able to help, I'll find out where they are and bring it in rather than risk tampering with it myself, I was worried I would have to send it off and it would take weeks to get back! Now that I have it I don't want to give it up for a minute!

ok.... next time tell him to youtube "sensor cleaning for Canon 1000D" before trying it again - tell him not to touch the mirror, dont use a cloth use specially designed stuff to clean the sensors and inside of a camera.

there are plenty of tools out there to do the job - or if you have spare cash, you can bring it to a camera shop which can do it for you.

if he didn't go to cleaning mode, and the mirror didn't flip up - chances are, he just wiped the mirror and didn't touch the sensor [with a bit of luck!]

never touch the sensor with anything bar specific sensor, not lens, cleaning equipment! They are extremely different things.

Hopefully it's just some grit that's gotten in when your man launched the cloth inside!

He probably caused more problems than he solved.

Bring it into a camera shop and let them fix it...
