    Hi Folks,
Looking for some rough pricing estimates and advice for an installation of a new stove and surround, we're building in a couple of weeks.
Basically, we have a house that has it's fireplace totally boarded up.
We're starting from scratch and the labour costs will essentially be free as my dad-in-law will be doing the work.

This is the work that needs to be carried out:

    - knock through the wall to the existing flu and ensure it is wide enough to hold the stove.
    - cut out the area around the stove, where we intend placing bricks to the back and either side of the stove, building up 2 pillars to hold a mantle. (approx a foot deep)
    - Cut out the area of timber floor to lay down the hearth, it will preferably be black marble.
    - A railway sleeper style mantle that will sit up on top of the 2 pillars.

    What needs to be bought:
    - Brand new stove (solid fuel), approx 6-9 Kw in size.
    - Marble hearth
    - Bricks for pillars and surround.
    - Solid piece of wood to act as a mantle.
    - Misc items, cement, etc...

Can anyone give me a rough idea how much we can realistically do this for?

    Cheers,

    C

I've done one very recently, 6 weeks ago to be exact, so my prices were:

    - Brand new stove (solid fuel), approx 9 Kw in size, with flue liner and chimney capping. €1,150
    - Marble hearth. €120
    - Bricks for pillars and surround. €80
    - Solid piece of wood to act as a mantle. €? (I got mine free)
    - Misc items, cement, etc... €50

Labour, if you have to pay it, will double this cost.

Cool. I'd be a happy man if i get all that done for that price... :)

Poor Uncle Tom I would also be interested in the brand of stove you refer to here. I'm installing a stove in a new build and have yet to settle on which stove. It will be installed in brick cladded chimney breast and I was wondering what would be an appropriate width for the chimney breast gap to accommodate a typical 6 - 9 kw stove? My builder originally left a 5ft gap which seemed excessive and subsequently reduced this to 4ft. Would this be sufficient to accommodate this size of stove?

    Thanks

4ft is plenty. I have 3 foot wide and its grand. They recommend 6 inches at sides of stove and at least 2 at back.

Sorry for butting in here, but do you have to have a marble hearth?
Is there any heat resistant tiles you can buy or some other cheaper alternative?

Also can i suggest you have a look at stoves online from the uk i bought mine off a website and it arrived promptly and i saved a few hundred in the difference from what i was being quoted here. My stove is quite big so savings may depend on what your spending or what kind of stove you want.
