Apologies if this has been posted already but can you get classic car insurance if the classic car you are driving is your main everyday car (i.e only insured on this car). Looking at a 30 year old mercedes 280. Having a bit of trouble gettting insurance quotes and any quotes I do get are over 1000 euro. Thought I would get very cheap insurance for this. Somebody told me if I joined a club the the IVTEA or similar I would be able to get classic car insurance. Unfortunately at work I cant access their website.

    Chauffe, Marcel, chauffe!

It depends if you can get low cost classic insurance and yes this question comes up a lot here :)

Have a look at the insurance link in the charter of this forum. There's a lot of info in there!

You're right in that you need to have a separate everyday car to get genuine classic car insurance.

You can get insured on a classic, but as a main car you'll pay main car prices.

First Ireland will entertain as first vehicle subject to a 10k miles limit. However, the price charged will be similar to a standard car policy.

Only two others I can think of that will offer a standard car policy on an older vehicle are AXA and Hibernian. Many companies won't quote for cars over 15, 20, etc years old.

Lack of competition doesn't help the cost. Consider moving to the UK to have greater choice of policies (many with unlimited mileages/as main vehicle) for pennies.
