Hi, I just noticed that music purchased on iTunes is 256kbps. What does this mean in terms of a pub/club environment?

I don't want to start up the mp3 v wav thing again, but I find it surprising that iTunes only offers 256. Do people generally avoid iTunes then?

I'm actually surprised it's not 192. I think people avoid iTunes because of the DRM thing.

Aye, locked down 256kps mp3's ain't the best for playing out tbh,

Hence why Beatport and all them kind of sites are much better as they offer top quality files, even WAV versions!

iTunes stopped selling DRM restricted a long time ago. I still don't buy from iTunes.

That's 256kbps AAC which is considered as good as, if not better than, 320kbps MP3

    Considered by who?
Wouldn't mind seeing something to back that up tbh...

Think I read something about that actually. Something about the quality of the 'codec' they use. I'm not sure what that means though

Apparently it's to do with the codec, as ThirdMan mentioned above. Whatever way the algorithm works, it can get a smaller file without harming the audio as much.

Trust me, AAC is far better than MP3, im pretty nerdy :P and doing a software degree currently.

Basically its the way the codec is composed and the way its compressed. MP3 takes out alot of pitches and sounds that AAC doesnt basically. Its very technical, but 256kps AAC, is about the same sound quality as 320kps VBR or even a bit higher.
