Carraig Midhe and Broadband

    Hi,

Just wondering if anyone here is living in Carraig Midhe, what broadband do ye use? And is it any good?

I rang UPC and supposedly they don't do broadband for Carraig Midhe (but they do for other parts of Corbally?), they just do TV in Carraig Midhe. I didn't really want to go with eircom as it seems a lot more expensive.

**And yes I know technically Carraig Midhe isn't Limerick but there are more old posts in the Limerick forum for Carraig Midhe than in the Clare forum, so I said I might get more responses here... Please don't turn this into a Limerick V Clare debate....

    Thanks

Surely if they can do TV they should be able to provide BB? What's their limitation in providing BB?

That's what I thought too (and seeing as they do BB in Westbury and Shannon Banks), but they said something about an aerial and not having a cable for BB in Carraig Midhe (not really sure what they were on about tbh!) and that it won't set up for BB in Carraig Midhe for another 6-12 months atleast...

    Have you a phone line?

Go for Imagine or Smart if they are available

I wouldnt bother with UPC to be honest. We have them for the TV and they are shocking, paying for the ability to record TV and they give us the wrong box.

We paid for HD too, when the lad came to install it we were told that it wasnt available in our area. That makes absolutely no sense to me at all

No, currently we don't have a phone line (but if I was going with UPC, I would have gotten the whole lot - BB/TV/Phone). Actually, UPC said they don't do phone in Carraig Midhe either.... Or HD?

Will look into Imagine and Smart though, thanks Pacifico.

I'm with Vodafone for my mobile, so I might look into that too.

If anyone lives there, what do ye use for BB?

    Thanks for the replies!

Sorry Melion, just saw your post there, do you reckon Sky is best so? Ya UPC said they don't do HD here at all, luckily they told us before we ordered anything!

I had Digiweb but around a year and a half ago they changed their signal and we cant get it in Carraig Midhe any more. I swapped to Eircom then as its the only other option for us. Its expensive as hell I think 3mb broadband was 55 euro per month. I recently swapped to Vodafone ( not the wireless dongle the actual physical phone line same as eircom) and im getting the same 3mb package for 40 a month. Which is ok and ive no problems with.

Only other option may be Wimax but im not sure if thats any good or not.

Sky have the estate pre wired for TV so i don't think UPC can lay any cable in here. I think sky have some deal done.

Thanks Grumpypants, ya vodafone seem to have the best deal (and you get free calls from the home phone so that will reduce the mobile bill!).

Thanks for explaining that too....Can you still get UPC TV there though?

UPC only provide a tv system for the houses in Carrig Midhe, the appartments are pre-wired for Sky, or a combination of RTE and Free-to air sat.

Your only options for broadband out there are a fixed landline service such as eircom or vodafone as already stated, or a 3g device from meteor and 3...which personally I wouldnt recommend as they are useless..

Yea you can get UPC TV you need on of the big metal poles you see on the houses in the front 2 rows. I had it but recently changed to a free to air dish to cut costs.

Thanks for the replies, sorry about the delay in getting back to ye.

Steveon, if the apartments are pre-wired for Sky does that mean we would have to use a communal dish? Thanks again!

Yes the appartments are pre-wired and are shared from a comunal dish, which is located roughly about half way down, behind tesco etc. Some appartments have 2 feeds sent to them, however some only have 1. I done the original install for a company I once worked for but it was taken over afterwards by a second company, who only ran the 1 cable...but i think a good 90% of them definetly have 2 feeds that are active.
